Perseverance’s SuperCam recently recorded the first clear evidence of electrical discharges—like tiny lightning—in the Martian atmosphere.
Its microphone picked up faint snapping sounds while its cameras saw fast changes in dust clouds inside dust devils.
These signals match what scientists expect when dust grains rub together and build up electric charge, then suddenly discharge.
The result shows that Mars has active atmospheric electricity, which can affect dust lifting, chemistry, and future human hardware on the surface.
