What a great post that can really show you some problems homeowners run into with masonry! Having any of these problems yourself? Contact us to get it fixed!

Most masonry failures don’t happen overnight—they develop slowly from a few consistent root issues. If you understand where structures typically fail, you can prevent small problems from turning into major structural repairs.

10 Major Masonry Problems Homeowners Should Watch For:
1. Water Intrusion
The #1 enemy of masonry. Once water gets behind brick or stone, freeze/thaw cycles will break it down from the inside out.
2. Failed Mortar Joints (Tuckpointing Needed)
Deteriorated joints allow moisture pe*******on and compromise the integrity of the wall system.
3. Improper Drainage / No Weep System
Without proper drainage, water gets trapped behind veneer systems, leading to bulging, cracking, and eventual failure.
4. Cracked or Settling Foundations
Structural movement telegraphs through the masonry, showing up as stair-step cracks or separation.
5. Improper Flashing Installation
If flashing isn’t installed correctly (or at all), water will bypass the system entirely and cause hidden damage.
6. Spalling Brick or Stone
Surface flaking or “popping” is a sign that moisture has infiltrated and is breaking down the material.
7. Chimney Crown Failure
Cracked or poorly built crowns allow water directly into the chimney structure—accelerating deterioration fast.
8. Lintel Rust and Failure
Steel lintels above windows and doors expand as they rust, causing cracking and displacement in surrounding masonry.
9. Improper Repairs / Band-Aid Fixes
Covering problems instead of fixing root causes often makes the issue worse—and more expensive later.
10. Lack of Maintenance
Masonry is durable, but not maintenance-free. Small issues ignored over time always turn into major repairs.

Bottom line:
Structure is not cosmetic. If the system behind the surface isn’t built or maintained correctly, failure is just a matter of time.

We are saddened to learn of the passing of Paul Gaglio, the founder of Paul Gaglio General Contracting.

Paul was not only a talented builder but also a valued customer and a true friend to many of us here at Extech. His legacy of craftsmanship and dedication lives on through his son, Michael Gaglio, who continues to run the company, and through the countless projects and relationships Paul helped build over the years.

Our heartfelt sympathies go out to Michael, the entire Gaglio family, and all who were fortunate to know Paul. He will be greatly missed.

We are devasted by the recent loss of our founder, Paul Gaglio, of Paul Gaglio General Contractors. Any who knew him knew how hard of a worker he was, and how much he prided himself on a job well done. He became a pillar in the community - there is rarely a job we work on where someone doesn't say, "I know Paul. He's a great guy."

Paul formed this company in 1959 after learning the trade from his father, who learned it from his own (who also learned it from his father) in Sicily, Italy. The art of masonry has been passed down through 5 generations, growing into the successful business it is today, run by Paul's son Michael Gaglio. A family business truly through and through. We are saddened by his passing, but grateful for all the work and dedication he put in throughout his life to pave the way for us.

Our heart goes out to his family and loved ones for this loss. His wake will be held at Hanley Funeral Home at 60 New Dorp Lane, 10306 on Thursday, August 7th from 6-9pm and on Friday, August 8th from 2-4pm and 7-9pm. His funeral will be at Holy Family Church on Saturday, August 9th at 9:30am.
