Last week Albert Odjidja attended the New York Building Congress' Education, Arts & Culture Committee meeting for a discussion on the downstate casino projects and their potential impact on New York City.

The meeting engaged attendees in conversation exploring the scale and complexity of these developments - including planning and approvals, economic and workforce impacts, infrastructure considerations, hospitality and entertainment components, and the opportunities and challenges these projects may create for the construction and development industry across the five boroughs - as well as a presentation by Hard Rock International about the upcoming Hard Rock Metropolitan Park project.

Today we celebrate the legacy of our founders and commemorate the 104th anniversary of a momentous achievement.

On May 27, 1922, Moses McKissack III and Calvin L. McKissack became the first Black licensed architects in the state of Tennessee and among the first Black licensed architects in the country. We are proud to commemorate this day as we continue the legacy started by our forefathers.

“Moses III, and…Calvin, incorporated our company in 1905, but that was before architectural licensing law went into effect in Tennessee, which was 1920. So, they were forced to get licenses or be put out of business. They went to architecture school via correspondence, but when they showed up to take the test, they were told black people weren’t allowed to take it. But they finally found a board member willing to go to bat for them and [were among] the first licensed black architects in the country.” -Cheryl McKissack Daniel as told to Interior Design Magazine.

The graduation season is always a time of pride. And this season, we couldn't be prouder of McKissack's Chair of the Board, Cheryl McKissack Daniel, or should we say Dr. Cheryl McKissack Daniel, who delivered the commencement address at Miles College and received an honorary doctorate on May 9, 2026.

In her message to the new graduates, McKissack Daniel spoke about the importance to "keep building, keep believing, and never underestimate the power of your purpose" - a message she exemplifies each day.

Congratulations, Cheryl! We celebrate you, your achievements, and your impact!

And a special thank you to President Bobbie Knight, Trustee Erika Jones, the Board of Trustees, the entire Miles College community, and the remarkable Class of 2026. We are deeply grateful for the incredible honor, warm welcome, and unforgettable experience.
