Drug repurposing asks a simple question. Could an existing drug work somewhere new?

AI can now score tens of millions of drug disease combinations in hours instead of months, but only when it is grounded in structured, trusted scientific knowledge that researchers can trace and validate.

In one documented case, adalimumab, a TNF inhibitor usually used for rheumatoid arthritis, was surfaced as a top option for a patient with idiopathic multicentric Castleman’s disease after other treatments failed. Doctors prescribed it. His organ function improved, his symptoms subsided, and nearly two years later he remains in remission.

Nurses are optimistic about how AI can support clinicians.

More nurses than doctors say clinicians using AI will deliver better care in the next 5 to 10 years, and 80% say AI will not replace clinicians but will become a critical assistant.

🎓 Beyond the campus: how urban research universities are redefining impact.

What happens when senior academic leaders step away from executive roles and return to faculty life?
What happens when universities move beyond their campus boundaries and become deeply embedded in the cities and communities they serve?

In this compelling piece for Not Alone: Leaders in Focus, Reginald DesRoches, President of Rice University, explores the evolving role of the modern research university — one that not only generates knowledge, but actively transforms it into scalable, real-world solutions through partnership, innovation and civic engagement.

From climate resilience and public health to entrepreneurship and education equity, Dr. DesRoches argues that today’s universities must shorten the distance between discovery and deployment — working hand-in-hand with industry, government, nonprofits and communities to drive meaningful impact.

📌 Key takeaways:

🔹Urban research universities can act as “living laboratories” where real-world challenges drive innovation and collaboration
🔹Strong cross-sector partnerships accelerate the translation of research into practical solutions at scale
🔹Students benefit from direct engagement with civic initiatives, entrepreneurship and community-based problem-solving
🔹The future of higher education depends on institutions pairing academic excellence with accessibility, responsibility and measurable public impact

As the article highlights, the value of a university is no longer defined solely by what happens within its walls — but by the difference it makes in the world beyond them.

Some of the most valuable chemistry is not written in text. It lives in figures and schemes.

AI based extraction is starting to interpret chemical structures and reaction pathways directly from images, bringing that hidden information into the searchable evidence base. AI handles extraction. Expert chemists review results.

Speed improves. Scientific integrity stays intact.
