We’re excited to finally share that Aleria has been selected to participate in the Founder Fellowship program.

Through Mayor Eric Adams’ Blueprint for Economic Recovery and a $1.5 million investment from the City of New York, the New York City Economic Development Corporation is scaling the Founder Fellowship program to serve additional tech entrepreneurs this year.

More specifically, the program aims to address inequalities within the startup industry by supporting historically underrepresented founders across NYC and providing them with the resources they need to scale their startups.

As one of the 100 selected startups, we’ll work closely with over the next few months and look forward to embracing the opportunity to shine a light on our work and leverage their network and mentorship to drive even greater impact.

Learn more about the program and see the full list of startups that will be participating in the link in our stories.

We've used our framework to collect over 5,000 individual experiences of exclusion from over 1,500 participants across dozens of organizations, ranging from small startups to global corporations in a wide range of industries. Here's what we've learned.

We have measured the level of inclusion for dozens of organizations and found that most experiences of exclusion come from leadership, direct managers and peers, and that members of underrepresented groups are particularly impacted by the behaviors of their peers and managers.

An organization is nothing but a collection of people, and each person’s satisfaction in the workplace results from the accumulation of specific experiences, most of them resulting from interactions with colleagues.

As the saying goes, you can’t control what you can’t measure. In the context of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), the vast majority of…

Solicit feedback from or invite folks from underrepresented groups to be part of the event planning process if they’re interested. Their feedback can be helpful in identifying what you may not be thinking about to create an inclusive experience.

Access & Participation is one of our nine Categories of Inclusion. Check out what we’re seeing with regards to this category in our work.

Inclusion can reduce your recruiting costs and increase the average quality of your talent by expanding the pool of qualified candidates, giving you a strategic advantage in your competition for talent.

The levels of diversity and inclusion in your company have a material impact on your recruiting costs and on the average quality of the talent you can hire.

Diversity data alone can’t measure commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.

Diversity data alone can’t measure commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.

A recent hearing the U.S. House Committee on Financial Services discussed the importance of diversity data as a way of assuring company commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. We propose that diversity data alone is inadequate, and that inclusion must also be measured.

Trying to increase diversity by hiring more people from underrepresented groups without actually changing the way people behave in their interactions with others, is extremely unlikely to yield real progress. Inclusion is the key.

While I agree that an inequitable power dynamic is undesirable, I completely disagree with this way of defining the term, and in fact I am a firm believer that inclusion (at least in the way I define it) is essential to foster and increase diversity.

Focusing only on diversity creates 2 problems:

It's lagging measure: what you do today may take months or years to have an impact.

It's an indirect measure: any initiative you undertake is only one of many factors that ultimately leads to change.

If you follow our work - or my writing on Forbes - you probably noticed that over the past year or so we have really been pushing the idea of focusing on inclusion as part of Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) efforts. This is a sharp departure from the typical approach to D&I: the vast majority of data su

Tips for increasing at work:
- give credit where it's due
- make recognition ongoing & personal
- clarify how everyone's role ties to the org mission
- flip the status quo with initiatives like reverse mentorships

Leveraging our proprietary framework, the Categories of Inclusion, Aleria measures inclusion at organizations by looking at the unique…

One of the reasons why so many leaders struggle with DEI is that they rarely find themselves being excluded. Their lack of personal experience with exclusion makes it difficult to understand what is really happening in their orgs and what to do about it.

Although the words “diversity” and “inclusion” are often combined, diversity is the only thing that companies know how to quantify. Companies that learn to quantify both diversity and inclusion will outperform those that continue to focus only on diversity.

Diversity metrics change slowly as employees leave or join the team. But while working to recruit a diverse workforce, so much can be done to improve the sense of inclusion within your org and, as a result, improve employee satisfaction & retention.
