Built in the shape of a beer keg in 1941 to attract passing motorists, the Idle Hour Cafe in North Hollywood became a flamenco bar called La Caña in the 1970s. It closed for more than 30 years, slowly deteriorating until it was revived in its current incarnation in 2015. Idle Hour’s barrel-shaped structure is one of a handful of remaining examples of the popular programmatic architecture that surrounded Toluca Lake and neighboring areas during its heyday beginning in the 1920s.
