You know those mainstream images we’ve all seen of various skills-based workers?
You know, the ones...
the image of a plumber whose pants never quite fit,
or the farmer in overalls,
or the greasy mechanic,
or the wonky shop teacher with three fingers and an apron, covered in dust....
We’ve all seen these images in mainstream media whether in a cartoon, TV show, Meme or movie and we’ve all chuckled, poked our humor and passed our judgements.
What’s the harm, right?
Well, unfortunately - wrong.
We’ve now seen the detrimental and lasting effects such imagery actually has on the public eye and their perception of these skill-based industries.
On the whole, workers in these industries often experience negative judgement and discrediting in the form of trivialized expertise and underestimated knowledge.
Many professionals in the Wood Technologies Industry have been labeled as hobbyists. Some report experiencing embarrassment when sharing their profession due to the reactions and preconceived notions from people. Several remember having trouble gaining support from their parents and family members to further develop their passions and talents, due to misinformation about the industry and the potential for a fulfilling career.
Now, before we go further, let us be clear. We are NOT saying that all jokes are bad. We are NOT saying no one can tease or poke fun in good humor. We know better than anyone that nobody is too good for a good joke.
BUT - it’s important to be aware of what is meant to be humorous and what is actually true.
When we’re spreading falsehoods and passing judgements on individuals as a result of misinformation and dramatization, we’re not only hurting people, but we’re making an impact on the industries that serve us most and make our world go ‘round.
So - in partnership with some of our industry associations, CP Adhesives is going to start actively working to reshape the image of the Wood Technologies & Wood Products Industry.
We’re going to talk about myths versus truths of our industry, starting with the topics listed below:
-Career tech education and how a career in wood technologies and manufacturing can provide an impressive living.
-Advancements and innovations the industry has made and how new technology has changed the way we manufacture.
-Environmental impact: physical sources of impact during manufacturing, sources of impact surrounding emissions and energy use, as well as ways that the industry is improving and benefiting the environment.
