What if the package leaflet were available in your preferred language?

In March 2026, the European Medicines Agency and the European Medicines Regulatory Network published a draft roadmap for the phased implementation of electronic product information (ePI).

ePI transforms authorized medicine information—including the Summary of Product Characteristics, package leaflet and labeling—into structured content that can be handled electronically.

EMA has also explored a model in which patients could scan a two-dimensional code on a medicine package and access up-to-date information in their preferred language, where available. This access model remains a proposal, and ePI is intended to complement—not automatically replace—the paper package leaflet.

Another important point: the ePI portal does not automatically generate translations. At present, language versions are drafted or imported one at a time.

Digital access may make medicine information easier to find, search and update. But every language version must still remain aligned with the authorized information.

Digitalization does not eliminate specialized translation. It increases the number of languages, formats, versions and access points that require linguistic accuracy, terminology control and scientific review.

A signature can document authorization. By itself, however, it does not show that a patient understood what they agreed to.

Effective January 1, 2026, Joint Commission’s National Performance Goal #7—Safe Informed Care—requires hospitals to provide information in a manner the patient can understand and to offer interpreting and translation services as necessary.

Informed consent is a communication process. Patients need clear information about their proposed care, its potential benefits and risks, and the available alternatives before making a decision.

When medical and legal information crosses languages, specialized translation helps preserve meaning, terminology, and consistency. It does not create consent; it helps make informed communication possible.

The label said morphine. The syringe inside could contain hydromorphone.

On August 5, 2026, the FDA published a nationwide voluntary recall notice involving one lot of prefilled syringes due to a labeling mix-up. According to the notice, using the mislabeled product could cause serious adverse health consequences, including respiratory depression, which can be fatal. No adverse events had been reported at the time the notice was published.

This was not a translation error—and translation alone would not have prevented it.

But the case makes one principle unmistakable: in regulated products, information must remain accurate and consistent everywhere it reaches the user.

When that information crosses languages, specialized translators and scientific reviewers become part of the same quality chain—helping preserve product names, strengths, dosage forms, warnings and instructions without introducing ambiguity.

In regulated communication, accuracy is not a cosmetic issue. It is protective.
