The DCO has released their 2025 Annual Climate Report for Delaware.

Delaware experienced six consecutive months of above average temperatures (February to July) in 2025 as well as seven months with drier than normal conditions. All portions of the state experienced some months with severe drought conditions.

Look at the incredible temperature gradient between our coastal DEOS stations and our DEOS stations several miles inland. That's a 34 degree difference between Bethany Beach and Dagsboro!

This type of situation occurs this time of year when we have a warm air mass with strong southerly flow moving in. The influence of the much colder Atlantic Ocean usually only extends a mile or so inland (at most) when the wind ditection is just right.

Our streak of days with snow covering the ground has come to an end in most parts of Delaware. After 24 consecutive days with snow cover at the New Castle County Airport, the grass is visible again. The 24-day run with snow on the ground is the 4th longest snow cover streak on record in Wilmington. Only 1978 (36 days), 1961 (31 days), and 2003 (27 days) have seen longer streaks. Now the question becomes—how long until the next flakes begin to cover the ground?

The freezing temperatures streak FINALLY ended yesterday, as temperatures around the state "surged" into the upper 30s and lower 40s. Wilmington's streak of 10 days tied for 5th all-time at that location, while Dover's streak of 9 days tied for 7th all-time for its period of record. We've put together some graphs and Q&A's to help explain this recent cold streak and to put it into some perspective.

There's more cold air on the way this weekend, as the general weather pattern stays pretty much locked in over the eastern United States for at least the next week and probably longer.

Anyone want to take a guess where the most freezing rain fell yesterday during the storm? As you can see from our DEOS wind map, Kent County took the brunt of that blow, as we have several frozen wind sensors out there.

Hopefully we get enough solar radiation to weaken the ice around the sensor propellers this week, so we can get back to taking good wind observations.

Today's snow would be in the 31st percentile for "first snow" dates in Wilmington. We haven't seen measurable snow (i.e. more than a dusting) in Wilmington, yet, but for real-time snow conditions, visit the DEOS snow monitoring page at https://deos.udel.edu/snow

It has been a relatively quiet tropical cyclone season along the Atlantic Coast of the United States, including Delaware. Of the 13 named storms this year (see the map below from NOAA), only a single storm has made landfall along the Atlantic coast. That storm was Tropical Storm Barry, which made landfall in South Carolina and moved up the coast from June 28th to the 30th. It dropped over five inches of rain in the Bethany Beach area and was responsible for wind gusts of over 30 mph in parts of Sussex County as the remnants moved through southern Delaware. Hurricane Erin, which never made landfall in the United States, caused significant coastal flooding along the Delaware coastline. With less than two weeks of the hurricane season to go, it looks like these will be the most impactful storms of the season for Delaware.

We're happy to announce that we've upgraded another one of our DEOS stations to a 10 meter tower. This time it's our New Castle weather station at the Historic Penn Farm. The station is already being used for some educational programs for students in the Colonial School District (the farm is owned by the district). Its data, especially its 10 meter wind speeds, will also provide a better standard for National Weather Service forecast model initialization and validation. One of the more interesting aspects of this and our other recent 10 meter tower installations, is the use of metal earth anchors instead of cement to anchor the tower. Not only is this anchoring method effective, it's more environmentally friendly than pouring a huge block of cement.

What a fantastic Coast Day 2025! Thank you to everyone who came out for the engaging conversation and special thanks to the University of Delaware College of Earth, Ocean & Environment for hosting a brilliant day. The weather was perfect, and our team loved sharing more about CEMA's work and providing tours of our new 10-meter tower at the Lewes Campus.
