111,900 nonresidential building fires were reported nationally in 2024, according to the U.S. Fire Administration.

National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)'s latest fire-loss research puts the impact into further perspective: nonresidential structure fires resulted in an estimated $3.6 billion in direct property damage in 2024. For the people responsible for commercial facilities, fire protection isn't something to think about only when an inspection is due.

Fire alarm systems require ongoing inspection, testing, maintenance and monitoring to help ensure they are ready when they're needed. NFPA 72 establishes requirements for the inspection, testing and maintenance of fire alarm and signaling systems.

Alyssa's Law has been passed in Illinois, but what about the National Capital Region? Here is an update:

❌ Maryland: Maryland has already enacted broader school emergency communication requirements, including panic-button capabilities, but has not enacted Alyssa’s Law as a standalone statewide mandate.

❌ Washington, D.C.: Alyssa’s Law has not been enacted in the District, making this an area to continue watching as school safety legislation evolves.

✅ Virginia: Virginia enacted legislation in 2026 allowing local school boards to provide employees with wearable panic alarm systems that can directly signal 911 and initiate schoolwide emergency notifications. Adoption is permitted, not mandated statewide.
