Maryland is investing $10 million to strengthen security for vulnerable communities across the state.

The FY27 Protection Against Hate Crimes grants will support 116 nonprofits, houses of worship, and community organizations with improvements ranging from access control and surveillance to facility hardening and emergency preparedness.

It’s a meaningful investment in a simple priority: helping people feel safer in the places where they gather, connect, and belong.

At Layer One, we’re encouraged to see continued investment in safer, stronger communities across the DMV. 👉 https://layeronecorp.com/layers-of-protection/

Commercial spaces accounted for 41% of active shooter Incidents in 2025, one of the most notable findings in the FBI’s 2025 Active Shooter Report.

Of the 34 incidents identified nationwide, 14 occurred in commercial locations, including retail, restaurants, entertainment venues, manufacturing facilities, offices and warehouses.

For organizations reviewing workplace safety, physical security and emergency preparedness, the data raises an important question: when an emergency occurs, how quickly can you communicate clear information to employees, customers and visitors? School safety is strongest when the pieces are designed to work together. That principle is central to the work of the Partner Alliance for Safer Schools (PASS), which approaches safety as a layered, ongoing process shaped by the unique needs of each school.

For Layer One, that philosophy closely aligns with our Layers of Protection: thoughtful assessment, informed decisions, and integrated systems that strengthen the broader safety strategy.

As Layer One expands its work from the DMV into Delaware, we’re proud to support PASS and the professionals advancing practical, comprehensive approaches to safer schools.

Safer schools aren’t built around one solution. They’re built layer by layer. https://layeronecorp.com/2026/08/27/school-safety-best-practices-layer-one-pass/

Twenty-five years ago, our nation experienced a loss that reached from New York City to the Pentagon and a field outside Shanksville, Pennsylvania—and into homes and communities across the country.

Today, we remember the lives taken on September 11, 2001. We honor the families who have carried that loss for a quarter century, the first responders who ran toward danger, and the countless people whose lives were forever changed.

We also remember what emerged in the hours and days that followed: extraordinary courage, compassion, service, and a sense of responsibility to one another.

Twenty-five years later, may we continue to carry that part of September 11 forward.
