Downeast Interior Storms are assembled in Newcastle, Maine by Rendon Sabina. The business was started when Rendon was asked by his neighbor to build seventy interior storm windows based on a basic model used by the Midcoast Green Col

laborative, a group in Damariscotta, Maine that strives to promote “green” living and economic growth in the mid-coast area. Downeast Interior Storms LLC was incorporated in 2009 and has started producing custom interior storm windows for homes, commercial buildings, and colleges in northern New England. Measurements are taken of each window, and a custom frame is constructed using Maine primed pine. These frames are then encased with a polyolefin film (non-toxic and biodegradable). The two layers of film create an insulating air space. A 1/2" open cellulose foam is then applied to the perimeter of the frame producing the air-sealing friction fit. The crystal clear and non-yellowing windows are hardly noticed. Two pull tabs are placed on the lower area of the window for easy removal. They are designed to be removed and stored during the summer months, and can easily be installed each fall. Each window is labeled to identify its proper place in the home or building. Downeast Interior Storms is committed to providing energy savings that all can afford. An average home window costs around $40. Given current energy costs, the investment will likely pay for itself within the first or second heating season. It’s a one time investment that saves you money year after year. Skylights and windows are a large heat-loss area in your home. When warm air nears a cold glass window, the air cools and drops. More warm air then moves toward the cold window, and, in turn, cools and drops. Eventually this cycle, known as the convection effect, will cool all the warm air in the room or building. Downeast Interior Storms create an insulating air space between the window and the heated air of a room or building. This dramatically slows down the convection effect in a room - allowing the warm air in the room or building to stay warm longer. Thus, allowing you to heat your room or building less often and at a lower intensity. The storm windows also seal out drafts, further increasing your heating efficiency, and create a sound-dampened, insulated feel.
