Today, the GlueX Collaboration reports in Physical Review C the measurement of baryon–antibaryon photoproduction cross sections off the proton, covering photon energies up to 11.6 GeV—the first study of its kind in this energy regime.
By analyzing angular correlations, we constrain the underlying reaction mechanisms using a Regge-like model of single-meson and double baryon/meson exchanges. The results show a clear suppression of strange quark–pair production relative to non-strange channels, and no evidence is found for a narrow “baryonium” structure in the proton–antiproton mass spectra.
