VA Christmas project was originally established in 2019. Due to an ever-increasing need for veterans organizations, we expanded to become the veterans care project. Starting in 2019, each Christmas gift bags are delivered to the patients at the VA Medical Center in Hampton. The bags contain lap blankets, socks, body wash, shampoo along with brushes and toothpaste, along with Christmas cards made by local elementary students. In 2019 104 bags were delivered at Christmas, after 2 years of covid we began again in 2022 and delivered 107 bags. In the spring of 2023 we included cards for Easter and Memorial Day. 4th of July in 2023 we held a cookout at the VA and fed over 130 residents, with the help of Randy Thomas of the Vanguard, Fertittas Diner, Pour Girls restaurant, County Grill, Mill Creek Tavern, and Mugzys Grille. Christmas of 2023 we 199 gift bags. Again at Easter, cards along with Easter lilies from two local flower shops, and Memorial Day cards. In the past two years the amazing children that Gloria de Lutheran School have made 1,000 cards. Our expansion now includes raising funds for the Mid-Atlantic chapter of Paralyzed Veterans, and the DAV Olympics held each fall. While some local companies contribute, it is only through Community efforts that this is made possible. Our veterans are the reason we live in a free country, and I do not want them to feel forgotten. 10 and $20 donations add up to make our work possible. We are a registered nonprofit at Truist Bank, donations can be made through Zelle, CashApp, or PayPal or by check to the Veterans Care Project.
