METROLOGY ENGINEER
Venture Plastics - Newton Falls, OH 44444 -- Position Open!
Metrology Engineer
Department: Quality Control
Reports To: Quality Supervisor/Manager
Location: Newton Falls, Ohio
General Purpose
The Metrology Engineer is responsible for developing, validating, and managing all dimensional measurement systems and methodologies to ensure product conformance to customer and internal specifications. This individual will serve as the subject matter expert (SME) in metrology—leveraging advanced measurement tools (CMM, vision systems, and other precision instruments) to establish robust inspection systems, support PPAP submissions, and lead continuous improvement efforts related to dimensional quality.
This role will elevate the company’s metrology capabilities through technical leadership, cross-functional collaboration, and a strong commitment to data-driven quality. The successful candidate will embody a detail-oriented mindset, possess the ability to interpret complex engineering drawings and GD&T, and drive improvements that reflect best-in-class quality assurance practices.
Key Responsibilities (Daily Duties)
Dimensional Quality and Metrology Systems
Lead the development and optimization of CMM programs (e.g., Zeiss Calypso), and other metrology methods to ensure repeatable and reproducible dimensional verification.
• Create and maintain inspection routines, work instructions, and control plans that align with product requirements and industry standards (IATF 16949).
• Identify critical-to-quality (CTQ) dimensions and work collaboratively with product engineers to ensure effective measurement strategies are implemented.
• Lead gage selection, R&R studies, and evaluation of new technologies (e.g., laser scanning, in-line metrology) to enhance accuracy, efficiency, and throughput. Advanced Quality Planning and PPAP Readiness
• Collaborate with engineering and production during new product introductions to establish dimensional validation strategies and complete full dimensional layouts.
• Prepare and submit dimensional results and supporting data for PPAP submissions on-time and in compliance with customer-specific requirements.
• Participate in APQP activities including FMEAs and control plan creation to ensure robust quality planning. Calibration and Measurement Systems Analysis
• Own the calibration system to ensure all measurement tools and systems are within compliance and traceable to national standards.
• Develop internal procedures and calibration plans for new measurement devices.
• Perform statistical analysis (Gage R&R, CPK, GRR, SPC) to validate capability of measurement systems.
Problem Solving and Continuous Improvement
• Provide dimensional root cause analysis support for customer complaints, internal non-conformances, and audit findings.
• Identify systemic measurement errors and process variations—develop and implement corrective actions.
• Drive proactive improvements in metrology systems and inspection strategies to reduce inspection time and improve accuracy. Cross-Functional Support
• Train and mentor Quality Inspectors, and other relevant stakeholders on metrology tools, drawing interpretation, and GD&T.
• Support internal and external audits, including IATF and customer-specific requirements.
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related technical field required.
• Prefer Minimum of 3 years of hands-on metrology or dimensional quality experience in a manufacturing environment, preferably in automotive or injection molding.
• Proficient in CMM programming (Zeiss Calypso strongly preferred).
• Strong understanding of GD&T, SPC, IMDS, and statistical analysis.
• Experience with dimensional layout, PPAP, and APQP documentation.
• Familiarity with measurement technologies such as CMM’s, vision systems, or optical comparators a plus.
• Strong communication and technical writing skills.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office and quality systems software (e.g., IQMS, GAGEtrak, QMS platforms).
Performance Metrics (KPIs)
• On-Time PPAP Dimensional Submissions: 100% compliance
• Calibration Compliance: 100% of gages calibrated on schedule
• CMM Program Availability: 100% coverage for active
production parts
• Dimensional Audit Findings (Internal/External): Zero major findings per year
• Measurement System Capability: ≥90% of gages with GRR
