It was a "ruff" job, but luckily, we had enough interns willing to volunteer at Father John's Animal House to do some landscaping, gardening, and socializing pups awaiting their furever homes. Huge thanks to this awesome team of volunteers and to Father John's for welcoming us.
Community partnership and volunteering is a huge part of Thorlabs' culture, and we're grateful to offer our summer interns an opportunity to contribute to the community outside of the office and manufacturing floor! 🐶🌼

⚽️ What a game! 2026 CLEO Soccer Tournament ⚽️

Thorlabs teams from New Jersey, Maryland, and Virginia came together in Newton, NJ for our annual game on the fields just outside of our Thorlabs Machine Shop!

Fun competition, fantastic teamwork, and a reason to enjoy this gorgeous weather and connect with colleagues on and off the field.
Congratulations to the winning Mechanics Team! 🏆

Until next year! 🙌

Who has a magical nature trail a stone's throw from their office? ✋🥾
Huge thank you to our intern team for picking up litter along our beautiful Newton, NJ trail near our headquarters.

💪Activity: 3-hour collection interval along the Newton Trail
📊Results: Bags of Debris Collected: 8
⚖️Aggregate Mass Collected: 30lbs

🔎Analysis:
Collection Rate (Weight): 10 lbs/hour
Collection Rate (Bags): ~2.67 bag/hour
Average Weight Density: ~3.75 lbs/bag

📝Notes:
Overall, the process can be characterized as a consistent, low-noise accumulation of material, with stable temporal collection efficiency across the observation window.

How small can a laser beam focus? 🎯
Physics doesn’t allow light to be perfectly collimated, nor can it be focused down to an infinitely small spot. This limit directly impacts performance across many technologies and how tightly light can be focused plays a critical role in applications like:
💡Laser marking
💡LIBS (Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy)
💡Photography
💡Photolithography
💡Microscopy
💡Fiber coupling
💡Optical storage capacity
Understanding and managing this limit is key to improving precision, resolution, and efficiency in these systems.

The Thorlabs crew is loving this Newton, NJ mural!
Over 35 years ago, a staff of only 10 people worked from a building on Mill Street. Today we're proud to keep our global headquarters in this charming town in the Skylands Region of New Jersey. Now, over 1300 employees work near Newton's adorable downtown, enjoy its walkable and bikeable trails, nearby lakes, and thriving community.

Many of our employees live in Newton and the surrounding area, and we’re committed to supporting the local economy through long-standing partnerships with community organizations, nonprofits, Sussex County Community College, and other local businesses.

We’re grateful to be part of a community that values local businesses. And we are proud to contribute to Newton's continued growth. 💙

Introducing students to the technologies and career possibilities of photonics through hands-on discovery at Brown University via the Thorlabs Mobile Photonics Lab. 🛻
A big thank you to the Brown University Department of Physics for hosting us and creating an enriching experience for visiting middle and high school students. We love to see curiosity and excitement for photonics come to life in students of all ages.

We love helping spark the next generation of innovators. ✨🥼
Tell us if we should add your university to our upcoming tour list. 🙋‍♂️

Einstein died 5 years before the first working laser was invented, even though he drafted the theory behind it more than four decades earlier.
On May 16, 1960, Theodore Maiman proved Einstein's quantum theory of radiation, but the potential of laser technology was still unclear. What problems could it solve?

By the time Thorlabs was founded in 1989, those ideas and tools had become powerful, everyday technology. Today, photonics underpins modern science and everyday life, from scanning barcodes to surgery, and we are excited to keep advancing light‑based technologies with intention and purpose.

Happy International Day of Light! 🔬✨🔦
