At TradesUp Org Spark events, tradespeople set up hands-on experiences and kids ages 5 to 12 show up ready to use them. Mason Lord thought it would be middle schoolers. It turned out the little ones are the ones who jump right in. And the tradespeople keep coming back every year because they have just as much fun as the kids do.

Mason Lord 's spark started at age seven. That's the entire idea behind the TradesUp Org flagship event, Spark, which puts kids at the top of a trades pipeline not by recruiting them, but by making sure they grow up knowing they can walk into a lumberyard or pick up a tool and know what to do.

Mason Lord has been thinking about where builders come from since he was seven years old, working in a neighbor's basement workshop after losing his father in first grade. That early experience became the foundation for TradesUp Org, and for Spark, an annual event that puts 500 kids ages 5 to 12 in front of tradespeople who actually want to be there.

In this conversation on Build It Forward with Nick Falkoff, Mason talks about what happens when little kids pick up a power tool for the first time, why middle schoolers hesitate and five-year-olds jump right in, and how he thinks about TradesUp Org not as a recruiting pipeline but as the top of a funnel, one where even kids who never enter the trades come out less intimidated by them.

Deconstructing and recycling the existing house, minimizing foam in the enclosure, and committing to Passive House certification were not isolated decisions. They were part of a single, coordinated approach shared by the owner, designer and our team at every step of this first-of-its-kind build in Wayland.
