Part of our team headed up to the last week to learn, connect, and cheer on Rachel during her presentation at the Fine Homebuilding Magazine Summit 2026!

It was great to reconnect with old friends and make new ones. As in past years, the talks and roundtables were thought-provoking, inspiring, and full of ideas we’re excited to bring back to our work.

A few standout moments for our team:
• Josh Edmond's unique strategy of bringing trades like electrical and HVAC in house and what's necessary to make that work.
• Jacob Deva Racusin's always fascinating perspective on how natural building practices are adapting alongside modern industry standards.
• Ian Schwandt’s testament to the mentors who had “held the rope for him” throughout his zig-zagging professional journey.
• Ben Bogie’s masterful facilitation of the roundtable discussions, teasing out the common threads and ideas across the conversations.
• Industry icon Ted Benson’s reminder that it’s not a better way of building if it’s not a better way of building for everyone, including his call for the industry to push for stronger building codes.

A big shoutout to Brian Pontolilo and the entire FHB team for putting together another outstanding program. We left feeling energized, challenged, and grateful to be part of such a thoughtful community.

A little behind-the-scenes look at this chimney restoration in progress. 🔨

We’re rebuilding the chimney top (which had been leaning somewhat precariously), and we're replacing the entirety of the stucco. We had been planning to repair the stucco, but once we opened things up and saw the stucco was pulling away, we pivoted to full replacement. Fortunately the bricks below the roof remain solid.

A bathroom doesn't have to be bigger to work better.

In this Tudor renovation, the primary bathroom was so narrow that it felt more like a hallway, and the vanity placement created a major pinch point for two people using the space at once. By shifting the wall just one foot, we were able to reorient the vanity and create a much more functional layout without sacrificing valuable bedroom space.

And upstairs, a new third-floor dormer gave us the opportunity to add something the home had been missing entirely: a full bathroom for the family's oldest child.

Two very different bathroom challenges, solved with thoughtful design and a little creative reworking of the existing space.

Last but not least on our Charitable Giving spotlight is Waltham Fields Community Farm, one of the organizations receiving funding through our 2026 Charitable Giving initiative.

Waltham Fields Community Farm is cultivating more than fresh, organically grown food, they're building healthier, more connected communities. Through sustainable farming, nutrition and environmental education, farmland preservation, and food access programs, they help strengthen the relationship between people, their food, and the land that sustains us.

Each year, the farm provides fresh produce to local food pantries, affordable CSA shares, and community markets while welcoming volunteers and students of all ages to learn about sustainable agriculture and environmental stewardship. Their work helps ensure that healthy, locally grown food is accessible to more people while protecting valuable farmland for future generations.

By expanding access to nutritious food and fostering a more sustainable local food system, Waltham Fields Community Farm is creating lasting impact across our region.
