At Byggmeister, we respect the character and craftsmanship of older homes while recognizing how much the way we live has changed. Today’s homes need to meet higher expectations for comfort, livability, and energy performance.

Our goal is to adapt older homes for modern life while preserving what makes them special, blending historic character with thoughtful, energy-smart upgrades.

Here are 6 of the most common ways we bring older homes up to 21st century standards.

Working with our friends at Wasted PBC on recent job sites and it’s been a great reminder that sustainability shows up in all parts of construction, not just the building itself.

Their “potties with purpose” approach goes beyond standard site sanitation. Waste is collected and a portion is turned into safe, effective fertilizer for local farms in Vermont, helping close the loop and reduce environmental impact. Wasted is also investing in technology and conducting groundbreaking research to transform the portable toilet industry into a more sustainable and green future.

Appreciate partners who think about the full picture of sustainability, from start to finish.

Squaring off an awkward corner and rotating the opening 90 degrees completely transformed this kitchen. These two small moves yielded a big impact. Additional storage to eliminate clutter, ample counter space for meal prep, and uninterrupted sight lines from the front door. Now, it's a kitchen you actually want to spend time in.

Maximizing space is all about making every inch work harder without sacrificing design. In this project, a custom-built room divider does double duty, creating separation between spaces while seamlessly housing a built-in TV and storage.

A renovation is about more than the finished space, it’s about the experience from start to finish.

We’re grateful to help homeowners bring long-awaited projects to life, and even more grateful for the trust they place in our team along the way.

Lead Carpenter Francis walks through a recent project featuring a somewhat unusual basement renovation. Because the house is on a steep hill, the back half of the basement is fully above grade.

We removed the existing framed floor, which was structurally compromised and sitting in dirt, and installed an insulated crawlspace to improve comfort, durability, and indoor environmental quality. We also swapped out a gas boiler and water heater for heat pumps and a heat pump water heater.

A complete transformation from the ground up, built for comfort, function, and long-term reliability. 🔨

We’re all about maximizing storage, especially when it helps us tailor a space to how the homeowners truly live.

In this 1870s Victorian renovation, the kitchen was reimagined by removing an underused pantry and reworking the layout to create an open, connected, and functional heart of this Victorian Era home. Custom built-ins take full advantage of the 12-foot ceilings, delivering floor-to-ceiling storage with thoughtful, everyday details built right in.

Tight footprint, thoughtful details. This renovation included new siding, windows, and a door install - plus mineral wool insulation along the side wall to create a safer, fire-resistant separation between neighboring buildings.

Stay tuned for the final result!
