Price Protection Programs for 2022 - 2023 Heating Season

For over 25 years, Hart & Iliff has offered a winter price protection program for our heating oil customers. Initially, we offered both a fixed price and a capped price program. In the last few years, we transitioned away from a fixed price, because it offers no downside protection, if the price drops. Even though it’s been clearly disclosed, each time prices drop during the winter, customers are extremely unhappy about being locked in at a higher price. For example, during the 2014/2015 heating season prices dropped $1.40 per gallon during the winter. This could easily happen again this winter.

The other program is a capped price. This program allows you to pay our regular posted price, but never above a price cap. During the 2021/2022 heating season the price cap was $3.299. As a result of significant price increases caused by shortages and the war in Ukraine, the people who participated in this program did very well.

In order to offer a capped price, we need to buy what are known as “call options” on the New York Mercantile Futures Exchange. These options give us the right to buy oil at a particular price, which establishes the cap. In recent years, the premiums for these call options have been approximately 20 cents per gallon. The recent increase in petroleum prices, has greatly increased price volatility. As volatility increases, so do option premiums. We just obtained a quote of 64 cents per gallon for call options for to the 2022/2023 heating season. That’s more than three times the amount we paid last year. At that rate, we don’t believe it makes sense to offer the program. We will continue to monitor conditions in the petroleum markets to see if premiums decline enough, for it to make sense to offer a capped price program, for 2022-2023.

The bottom line is, a fixed price makes no sense because there is no downside protection and a capped price makes no sense when the premium is 64 cents per gallon. If we wouldn’t sell a fixed or a capped price program to our mother, we won’t sell it to you, our valued customers. Please call us with any questions or concerns. At Hart & Iliff your comfort is our business.

A Letter to Our Customers About The Recent Oil Price Spike

Unsurprisingly, we’ve been getting many calls around two connected issues- the surge in fuel prices and supply concerns. People are astounded by how much prices have risen, and how fast. So are we. They are also concerned that there will be interruptions in supply that will cause them to run out of fuel.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine shocked the energy markets, sending crude oil to record territory and spiking all energy prices. We’ve had increases from our heating oil suppliers of over $1.50 per gallon in less than a week!

What's coming next

We don’t know where things will go from here. One thing we can tell you is that we dislike this as much as you do. Some people are under the misconception that when prices rise, we make more money. The opposite is true. People cut back usage. They have trouble paying their bills and our receivables skyrocket. Meanwhile, we must pay our suppliers in just 10 days. It is an awful mess for everyone.

One thing you can count on is that we will not let you run out. We have been in business for many years and have very strong relationships with suppliers and financial institutions.

If you are having trouble paying your bill, talk to us before it becomes a problem. Many times, we can work out something to give you more time, especially if you’ve been with us a while. We can also set you up on a monthly payment plan.

Nothing will make us happier than when prices start dropping. Until then, trust us to look out for you and pray for the people of Ukraine.

If you are thinking of converting to natural gas you may want read this exert about natural gas prices which appeared in an article in the Wall Street Journal on June 21, 2021.

GAS PRICES SOAR IN TIME FOR SUMMER

Natural-gas prices are starting the summer air-conditioning season nearly twice as high as they were a year ago.

Demand for the fuel is picking up as the world’s economies reopen and as Americans dial down their thermostats for what is expected to be a hot summer. Meanwhile, U.S. producers have stuck to the skimpy drilling plans they sketched out when prices were lower, eliminating the glut that was keeping them depressed.

Natural-gas futures ended Friday at $3.215 per million British thermal units, up 96% from a year ago and the highest price headed into summer since 2017. Futures traded even higher—and regional spot prices jumped—when triple-digit temperatures baked the Southwest earlier this month. Analysts expect prices to be even higher later in the year when it is time to fire up furnaces.

It isn’t just in the U.S. where gas is running high. Dutch gas futures, a barometer for prices in Western Europe, have more than doubled over the past year—including a sharp rise since February—to multiyear highs. In Asia, imported liquefied natural gas is fetching more than five times what it did last June, beckoning tankers full of chilled shale gas across the Pacific.

More expensive gas has stoked demand in international markets for coal, with which gas competes to fuel power plants. Futures prices for thermal coal loaded at a terminal in Newcastle, Australia, have more than doubled from a year ago. The benchmark price has added 27% over the past month and hasn’t been so high in nearly a decade.

If higher prices persist, Americans can expect bigger utility bills. The work-from-home class could feel a pinch. The pandemic shifted energy costs from employers to employees, who have heated and cooled home offices and run electronics when they would normally be away at work.

The Advantages of Inverter Technology in Central Air Conditioning

There are two types of electricity, alternating current (AC), which changes direction periodically, and direct current (DC), in which the current only flows in one direction. In the late 1800s, there was a public feud between Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla (for whom the automobile company is named) over which type of power is better. Edison was a proponent of DC power whereas Tesla favored AC power. It turns out, depending upon the application, they were both right.

The power that we get from the electric company is AC current, because it is easier to transmit over long distances with less loss of power. Most of the large appliances in your home such as refrigerators, stoves, dishwashers, and washing machines run on AC. However, electronic devices such as computers, flat screen TVs, cell phones, and batteries all run on DC. Depending on the make and model, electric cars run on either AC or DC current, but the batteries that supply the energy are all DC. It is relatively easy to convert AC current to DC current using a rectifier. For example, when you charge your smart phone, a rectifier in the charging block converts the current to DC, which is used by your cell phone.

Most central air conditioning systems run on AC. However, many of the more advanced and efficient air conditioning systems on the market today use inverter technology. An inverter system converts the AC current into DC. With an AC system, the compressor is either on or off, causing the unit to repeatedly start and stop to maintain the desired room temperature. Compressors which run on DC power are smaller, quieter, and can be modulated up or down to run at different speeds, like a dimmer switch on a light fixture.

With all central air conditioning, it’s important to match the size of the equipment to the required cooling load. Obviously, on a 90 degree day, the demand for cooling will be significantly higher than on a 70 degree day. Because DC inverter technology allows the compressor to ramp up and down, the system modulates to match the cooling output to the cooling load. This causes the unit to cycle less frequently, remove more humidity, save energy, improve comfort, and extend equipment life.

If you’re in the market to install or replace an air conditioning system, you may want to consider one like the Bosch IDS (pictured), which uses inverter technology.

A New Way to Control Hard Water

Hart & Iliff is a distributor/dealer for a revolutionary new water treatment system named HydroFlow. HydroFlow was developed in Europe and is now available in the United States. It contains patented technology which represents a breakthrough in the treatment of hard water. This technology could possibly make other water treatment systems obsolete. HydroFlow generates an electrical charge or current of 150 kHz which spread throughout the water in the entire plumbing system. This electric fields cause the mineral ions in the water to cluster together preventing limescale build up. The benefits of HydroFlow are as follows:

1. It’s easy to install, doesn’t consume salt and requires no maintenance.
2. It adds no chemicals to the water and doesn’t change its chemical composition.
3. Water treated with HydroFlow is healthier to drink since it doesn’t remove healthy minerals (calcium and magnesium) and replace them with unhealthy salt.
4. Since it prevents the buildup of limescale and gradually removes existing lime scale, it cuts heating costs, conserves energy and extends equipment life.
5. It operates on a standard 110 volt electrical circuit and costs only pennies a day to operate.
6. Unlike other treatment systems, the water does not have to flow past the unit to be treated. An electrical field is transmitted throughout the entire plumbing system, protecting it 24 hours a day.
7. It’s safe for use on all types of plumbing pipes, including plastic, lead and copper.
8. The electric signal kills algae and bacteria, helps prohibit corrosion and does not interfere with any electronic devices in the home including televisions, radios, telephones, tablets, pacemakers, and computers.
9. HydroFlow comes with a five-year warranty and a six-month money-back performance guarantee.
For more information on how HydroFlow could replace your water softener or for pricing, call us at 973-383-1421.

AN INTERVIEW WITH HART & ILIFF'S CHARLES BRAND

This interview with Charles Brand, the owner of Hart & Iliff, was conducted by Lorraine Cline. Lorraine is the principal of Cline Design, which has produced Hart & Iliff's ComfortLine newsletter for more than 20 years.

Q: How is Hart & Iliff doing through this Covid-19 pandemic?

A: This has obviously been a difficult time for everyone. Since we provide essential services to our customers we felt it was important for us to keep operating. No matter what else happens in the world,
people need to be warm in the winter and cool in the summer. We’ve done our best to keep our customers and our employees
safe while continuing to provide these essential services. In the beginning, we had trouble obtaining the personal protective
equipment we needed. But now we’re well stocked. Fortunately, all of our employees have stayed safe and healthy. With Whitney
out on maternity leave (she had a girl) and Susan working from home, we’ve been short on office help which has made things a little challenging. Whitney’s back now which is helping a lot.

Q: What is the history of Hart & Iliff?

A: Hart & Iliff was formed in 1889 by Nathan Hart and Lewis Iliff, two brothers-in-law. Originally, the company sold feed grain, lumber, and coal. At some point Lewis Iliff bought out Nathan Hart. When Lewis Iliff retired, the company was run by his son, Charles Iliff, Sr., and later by his grandson Charles Iliff, Jr. In the 1930s,
the company started selling liquid fuels and servicing heating and air-conditioning equipment. In 1971, Charles Iliff, Jr., sold the
company to my parents, Albert and Florence Brand. Many of our old-time customers still remember my parents well. My father died
in 1987 from lung cancer. My mother was struggling to run the business by herself and deal with my father’s death at the same
time. Since I’m an only child, it quickly became clear I either had to get involved in the business or we had to sell it. In January
1988, I joined my mother to help run the business. We worked together for 12 years until my mother passed away in 2000.

Q: You’re an attorney and prior to joining your mother at Hart & Iliff you were practicing law. Was it a tough decision for you to give up your career to help your mother?

A: Yes, it was. I always thought that I would never work at Hart & Iliff, yet at the time, it seemed like the right thing to do, since my mother needed the structure of going to work every day.

Q: Your family has owned Hart & Iliff for nearly 50 years. What are you most proud of?

A: My parents were the finest, most ethical people I’ve ever known. They always tried to do what was best for their customers. We’ve been able to continue that tradition. Customer satisfaction is very important to us. We are not perfect, and like everyone, we sometimes make mistakes. However, we stand behind our work and will bend over backwards to make things right. During this pandemic, I’ve been talking to customers more than I have in years. What I’ve found is that our customers really do recognize and
appreciate the way we run our business.

Q: What are your goals for Hart & Iliff for the future?

A: To hire the best employees, continue to provide our customers with outstanding service, and grow our customer base.

Q: In addition to running Hart & Iliff, you’re a partner in the law firm of Dolan & Dolan. How did you get back into law?

A: In October 1988, my mother and I went to a Newton Chamber of Commerce dinner meeting. My mother happened to sit next to
Rick Hollyer, a partner at Dolan & Dolan. In the course of their conversation, my mother mentioned that I was an attorney,
a CPA, had an MBA degree, and a graduate law degree (LLM) in taxation from NYU. The next day Rick called and asked if I would
have lunch with him. He asked me if I would be interested in coming to work at Dolan & Dolan. I said it wouldn’t be possible
because I was working full-time at Hart & Iliff. He asked me if I would be willing to work part-time. That night I talked to my mother about it. We both thought that it would be a shame
to let my legal education, knowledge, and experience go to waste. Obviously, it worked out well and I’ve been there ever since.

Q: What type of law do you practice?

A: Taxation, wills, estate planning, estate administration, business law, and debtor creditor work, including bankruptcy and collection practice.

Q: You once told me that Dolan & Dolan is almost as old as Hart & Iliff.

A: That’s right. Dolan & Dolan was founded in 1908. I have no doubt that when Nathan Hart and Lewis Iliff needed legal advice that they would call Dolan & Dolan.

Q: How do you manage the two careers?

A: The simple answer is, by working 11 to 12 hours a day.
