Congrats to CAPS and OU School of Meteorology Graduate Student, Evan Chladny, for winning the First Place Student Poster Award at the joint 15th Research-to-Operations and 21st Symposium on Operational Satellites Systems poster session at the American Meteorological Society's Annual Meetings. His poster was part of CAPS' 3-km ensemble work with the NWS Hydrometeorology Testbed titled, "Developing an Ensemble Machine Learning Framework for Flash Flood Prediction"

CAPS Senior Scientist and Director of Research, Nate Snook, and his team from CAPS and OU AI2ES groups have been awarded an NSF grant to use Deep Learning machine learning techniques to advance our understanding of tornadogenesis processes.

The National Science Foundation has funded a team of OU scientists to take a cutting-edge approach to understanding the life cycle of tornadoes.

This summer CAPS is running a 15-member 3-km resolution forecast ensemble over the US for the operational weeks of the NOAA HMT Flash Flood and Intense Rainfall Experiment (FFaIR) using the UFS FV3-LAM model. Novel products include machine learning (U-net Deep Learning) significant rainfall probabilities and ensemble means generated after spatial alignment of members (Spatial-Aligned Mean). NOAA has recently approved for funding a proposal led by Daphne Ladue, "Streamlining Development of the Brief Vulnerability Overview Tool (BVOT) and Assessing the BVOT’s Impact on Tailored Messaging", one led by Alex Marmo, "Leveraging Efforts to Provide Localized Probabilistic and Timing Guidance for NWS Core Partners " and another led by CASR scientist, Beth Hurst, "Rural Region Readiness: Collaborative Learning through Integrated Warning Team Workshop Sessions on Tornado Safety"
