Excavation and trenching remain among the most hazardous activities in construction. A cave-in can occur without warning, and just a few cubic feet of soil can weigh enough to trap, crush, or kill a worker in seconds.

Too often, workers enter trenches because "it will only take a minute" or "we've done it this way before." Unfortunately, the ground doesn't care about experience, schedules, or good intentions.

The safest trench is the one where hazards are identified and controlled before work begins.

Take a moment to watch this video and remember: No task is worth risking a life.

As we head into the weekend, it's a great time to pause and think about one of the most critical hazards in construction: trench and excavation work.

A trench can become deadly in seconds. That's why next week, during Trench Safety Stand Down Week, we'll be reinforcing the importance of planning, inspections, protective systems, and empowering every employee to recognize hazards and stop work when conditions change.

At W. L. French, trench safety is not just a focus for one week—it is a commitment we make every day. Stand Down Week gives us an opportunity to refresh our knowledge, have meaningful conversations in the field, and ensure everyone understands the risks and controls associated with excavation work.

Take a minute to watch this video and help us kick off Trench Safety Stand Down Week with safety at the forefront.

👷 Protect the trench.
🔍 Inspect the conditions.
🛡️ Use the right protective system.
🗣️ Speak up when something isn't right.
🏠 Make sure everyone goes home safe.

See you Monday as we begin another important week dedicated to protecting our workforce.

🚛 Trucking Tuesday: Understanding Driver Blind Spots

As professional drivers, one of the most important safety challenges we face every day is managing blind spots. Whether you're behind the wheel of a tractor-trailer, dump truck, low bed, or passenger vehicle, understanding where visibility is limited can prevent serious accidents and save lives.

Large commercial vehicles have significant blind spots on all four sides:
🔹 Directly in front of the truck
🔹 Directly behind the truck
🔹 Along both sides, especially the passenger side

When another vehicle, pedestrian, cyclist, or motorcyclist enters these areas, they may become completely invisible to the driver—even when mirrors are properly adjusted.

For drivers, blind spots require constant awareness, proper mirror use, careful lane changes, and extra caution when turning, backing, or operating in congested areas. Taking a few extra seconds to verify a clear path can make all the difference.

For the public, it's equally important to understand that if you cannot see a truck driver's face in their mirror, chances are they cannot see you. Avoid lingering beside large trucks, especially near intersections, merge points, and construction zones. Give trucks additional space when passing and never cut closely in front of a commercial vehicle that requires a much longer stopping distance.

At W. L. French, safety is more than a policy—it's a responsibility we share with everyone who travels our roads. By understanding blind spots and practicing defensive driving, we can all help ensure that every driver, worker, and family member gets home safely.

54 years.

It's not a round number. It's not a milestone anniversary. But at WLF, we believe every single year in business is worth celebrating — because every year is built on the people who show up, dig in, and get it done.

This year, as we mark 54 years, we find ourselves reflecting on where we started and how far we've come — not because of any one decision or any one moment, but because of the extraordinary team that has carried this company forward year after year. The people who are a part of this business, who make it what it is and what it has become.

Four years ago, founder Bill French Sr. sat down to reflect on our 50th anniversary. His words captured something we carry with us every day — the pride, the purpose, and the responsibility of building something that lasts.

To every member of the W. L. French team — past and present — thank you. This anniversary belongs to you.

Here's to 54 years, and everything still ahead. 🚧🚚🔴⚫🇺🇸

The strongest teams look out for each other.

Real conversations. Real people. Real strength.

At W. L. French, we know mental health matters just as much as physical safety. Hearing directly from the men and women in the field reminds us that checking in, speaking up, and supporting each other can make all the difference.

Some of the strongest people are fighting battles no one can see.

If you’re struggling, please know you don’t have to carry it alone. One conversation, one call, one person reaching out can make all the difference.

🚛 Sharing the Road Safely with Trucks Matters 🚛

This Safety Saturday, we’re resharing an important video featuring our Director of Environmental Health & Safety, Tim Hunt, and former Director of Transportation—and our friend—Mark Sargent.

The video is just over two minutes long, but taking the time to watch it could save a life.

Far too often, drivers aren’t taught the basics of how trucks operate. Large trucks don’t just need more space to stop—they need more time. When a truck driver applies the brakes, the vehicle doesn’t respond like a passenger car. Due to weight, momentum, and air brake systems, it takes significantly longer for a truck to slow down and come to a complete stop.

When you cut in front of a truck, you’re not just taking away space—you’re taking away the time that driver needs to react and stop safely.

Please remember:
• If you can’t see the driver, they can’t see you
• Trucks need both more distance AND more time to stop—don’t cut in front of them
• Pass safely and avoid riding alongside
• Be patient—your few seconds could be someone’s life

Nearly 90% of what we rely on every day—food, medicine, building materials—gets delivered by truck. Our economy doesn’t move without trucks, the men and women who drive them, or the mechanics who keep them on the road.

Let’s show respect and awareness for those behind the wheel who face distracted drivers, road rage, heavy traffic, and dangerous situations every day. Understanding how trucks operate isn’t just helpful—it’s critical to everyone’s safety.

Please watch and share this video—these are the kinds of things that should be taught in driver’s education.
