🇺🇸 – Why Do We Celebrate Labor Day?

Labor Day is more than the unofficial end of summer. ☀️

It’s a day to recognize the American workforce and the contributions workers have made to our country’s growth and success.

In the late 1800s, workers, including children, faced 12-hour days, seven days a week, often in dangerous factories, mills, and mines. Even young children worked long hours for little pay.

Workers and labor organizations fought for change.

Today, we benefit from those victories with:
💰 Fair wages & overtime pay
⏰ Shorter workdays & weekends
🦺 Safer working conditions
👧 Protections against child labor
🤝 The right to organize and bargain collectively
🛡️ Protections for workers injured on the job

Labor Day gives us a chance to recognize our hardworking people and honor those who helped build this labor legacy. 🇺🇸

At FZE, we’re proud to be part of that workforce—and proud of the work American manufacturers do every day.

Look what has arrived at FZE! 👀

We received some BIG material that has us wondering… what are we making with this? 🤔

In the foreground:
🔹 21+ foot pieces of 5" diameter galvanized steel pipe
Behind them:
🔹 20+ foot pieces of 6" diameter 304 stainless steel pipe

And now the possibilities begin…
🌀 Will they be sawn into shorter pieces?
🌀 Will the finished parts have holes drilled or machined?
🌀 Will we add components?
🌀 Maybe chamfers or other machining?

So many possibilities.

– The Penny That Wasn’t Supposed to Exist! 🪙

FZE knows the right material can make all the difference.

During World War II, copper was critical to the war effort, so the U.S. Mint made a major change: in 1943, pennies were made from zinc-coated steel instead of copper.

The change created some problems:
🪙 Their silver appearance caused confusion with dimes.
🧲 Their magnetic steel caused trouble with vending machines.
⚙️ Exposed steel edges could rust.

The Mint returned to a copper-based alloy in 1944, using recycled brass shell casings from the war effort.

Here’s an interesting caviat…
💰 A few copper blanks apparently made it through the transition and were accidentally struck with the 1943 date.

Today, only about 40 1943 copper pennies are known to exist—and they can be worth hundreds of thousands to more than $1 million to collectors.

– Wow! That’s Fantastic! 😂🍦

Nope, this one didn’t happen at FZE—but we’re sharing it because we can ALL empathize with a moment like this! And honestly… we enjoyed the fun. 😆

You may have seen the video making its rounds on social media and even the news.
A local Fond du Lac tradition since 1949, Gilles Frozen Custard became the center of attention after an employee had an unfortunate custard mishap. 🍦

On August 12, Carter Sampson was carrying a large container of custard mixture from the cooler when it slipped from his hands. Security footage captured the whole thing. 📹

What started as an accident went viral, making its way from social media to local news and eventually national networks including CNN, Fox News, and ABC World News Tonight.

And Carter? He took it in stride, reminding us that sometimes you just have to laugh at life’s accidents and move on. 👏

But there’s one thing the news reports keep getting wrong…
🤨 “Shake mix”? Nope. We know the truth. 🍦 IT’S CUSTARD MIX! 🍦

Sometimes things don’t go according to plan. In manufacturing, we know that all too well. The key is how you respond, learn, fix it, and keep moving.

So, Carter, from one production crew to another…

🤖🔥 Robots Are Still Cool! 🔥🤖

We’ve shown off our Miller Cobot welder before—and we’re still pretty proud of it.

Why? Because we’re proud of the diversity of our shop and the capabilities we can bring together under one roof.

Machining. Fabrication. Welding. Automation. And yes… robots. 🤖

There’s just something pretty cool about watching our Miller Cobot go to work—laying down consistent welds while adding another level of capability to our manufacturing operation.

🇺🇸⚒️ – Did You Know the U.S. Once Had a Half Cent?

At FZE Manufacturing Solutions, we work with metals every day. It’s fascinating to look back and see how metals like copper have played a role in American manufacturing, commerce, and history for centuries. ⚙️🇺🇸

Looking at American history and metals, here’s a little piece of early U.S. coinage you may not know about. The United States once had a half-cent coin! 🪙

The half cent was the smallest denomination ever issued by the U.S. Mint. It was minted from 1793 to 1857.

And what was it made from? 100% copper. 🟠

The half cent was worth 1/200th of a dollar and helped make smaller everyday transactions possible in the early years of the nation.

Over its history, the half cent featured several versions of Liberty, including:
• 🗽 Liberty Cap – 1793–1797
• 🗽 Draped Bust – 1800–1808
• 🗽 Classic Head – 1809–1836
• 🗽 Braided Hair – 1840–1857

By 1857, the half cent was discontinued as changing economic conditions made the coin less useful.

So here’s the question: What would a half cent be worth today? 🤔
