A commodity building plays an important role in the daily routine of a dairy farm, keeping feed ingredients organized, protected from the weather, and accessible when it’s time to mix feed.

When planning one, storage capacity is only part of the picture. Bay widths, unloading clearance, and room for trucks and loaders to maneuver all deserve attention. Planning around the equipment and delivery methods helps make the space more useful every day.

We recently wrapped up this commodity building and appreciate the opportunity to be part of another local farm’s investment in its operation. Thank you Oakfield Corners Dairy for trusting the WCS crew with the project!

Why Future Expansion Should Be Discussed Before You Build

One of the most important things to think about is:

“What will this facility need to look like in five years?”

Future expansion affects today’s design.
It can impact:
• Building location
• Door placement
• Endwall design
• Utilities
• Drainage
• Traffic flow
• Site grading
• Column layout
• Where additions may tie in later

This building was designed with what called an expandable endwall which will save the customer money when the time comes to expand.

Many businesses build for what they need today and then realize a few years later that expansion will be difficult or expensive.

Planning for future growth does not always mean spending a lot more now.
Sometimes it simply means making smarter decisions before construction starts.

The right equipment can make a major difference in both production and safety.

Our crews regularly work with cranes, telehandlers, boom lifts, scissor lift and other equipment necessary to be efficient and keep everyone safe.

We always try to repair an existing building when it makes sense. But sometimes the savings from going the repair route doesn't outweigh the cost and peace of mind that comes with starting fresh with a brand new building.

Experienced Carpenters – Want Steady Commercial & Ag Work With A Crew That Shows Up?
Compensation:
$55,000-$75,000/year

Who This Is For:
You might be a fit if,
-You’ve got real experience in commercial or agricultural carpentry (post‑framing, stud framing, or similar).
-You can read a tape, follow plans, and build square and plumb without hand‑holding.
-You show up on time, sober, and ready to work.
-You don't melt when it rains.
-You actually like working with your hands and getting things done not standing around watching other people work.
-You know how to dress like you are going to a construction site and not a basketball tournament.
-You are not afraid of heights and can walk purlins or sheet a roof.

If that doesn’t sound like you, this job will suck. If it does, continue reading.

What You’ll Do:
-All aspects of building wood framed buildings.
-Set posts, stud frame walls, install trusses, install metal roofing and siding.
-Install interior finishes like liner panel or truss core.
-Install doors, panels, and misc repairs on existing structures.
-Work safely at heights with lifts, ladders, and fall protection.
-Work as part of a crew under a foreman to hit schedule and quality targets every week.

What Winning Looks Like (First 90 Days)
-You’re reliably on site, on time, with your basic tools every day.
-Your work passes inspection checks the first time.
-You wait until your break to respond to texts and tweets from your friends or talk on the phone with your mom about what you want for dinner.
-You can take a task (e.g., “frame this bay,” “sheet this wall”) and execute without babysitting.
-The crew wants you back on the next project.

What You Get:
-Steady, full‑time work on commercial and agricultural projects (lots of dairy/ag facilities).
-Weekly pay, OT often, sick time, vacation time, paid holidays, IRA with % company match, work boot reimbursement, project bonuses.
-Modern tools and equipment
- A crew that takes pride in doing it right, not just fast.
-A company and crew that works hard but has fun.
$6,000 sign on bonus package.

What Makes This Hard:
-Early mornings, farm environments often, and working outside in all types of weather as long as safety is not sacrificed.
-Physical work: lifting, climbing, being on your feet all day.
-You will be held to a professional standard on safety, quality, and attitude.

How To Apply:
Send a text to 585-704-6170 or email [email protected] with:
-Years of carpentry experience
-3 types of projects you’ve worked on (ex: “post‑frame barns, metal building repairs, commercial interiors”)
-Your expected hourly rate.
You can attach your resume if you have one.
Put the subject or first line: “Carpenter – I Can Build For You”
We’ll review and get back to qualified candidates within 24hrs

If your roof has been leaking for a while this could be what your framing looks like. sometimes it is hard to see the severity of the damage from the ground.

What Causes Condensation in Buildings?

Condensation is one of the most misunderstood building problems.

Many people assume it is a roof leak, but that is not always the case.

Condensation is often caused by warm, moist air hitting a cold surface.

Common contributors include:
• Poor ventilation
• Lack of insulation
• Missing v***r control
• High humidity inside the building
• Unheated or partially heated spaces
• Improper roof or wall assemblies

These panels with a factory installed felt coating are a perfect option for unconditioned storage buildings. The felt absorbs condensation the instance that it forms. Then holds the moisure until humidity and temperatures stabilize and then the moisure is released back into the air.

Can You Stay Operational During Construction or a Facility Renovation?

For farms, trucking companies, warehouses, and production facilities, shutting down is usually not an option.
There is almost alway a way for you to stay operating during a construction or renovation project, it may just not be at 100%.

Some things to consider when planning a project:
• Where employees will work
• How trucks, equipment or livestock will move
• What areas need to stay accessible and operational
• When deliveries happen
• What work creates the most disruption
• How weather could affect exposed areas
• Whether temporary openings or protection are needed

With proper planning you can finish your project while keeping the business moving.
