Before, after, and some process shots of another custom door set pulled together and perfectly executed by the door master himself, Keith.
Michelle is a repeat customer and we don't like calling her a customer, she's become a friend of ours. She has excellent taste and she definitely likes to present Keith with a challenge. Michelle bought these really cool doors and wanted to incorporate them into her pantry somehow. The problem at hand was that the pantry opening was roughly 48x80 and the doors were only 22x70. Bulking up the width wasn't going to be a problem, that was just a matter of anchoring the trim closer together. (custom trim made by Keith to match the doors).
But the real challenge was how to make up the difference in height. At first Keith considered anchoring her new doors to her old doors, and make them swing as we've done in the past. That would have been too heavy for the concealed hinges Keith wanted to use. The ultimate goal here was to create the illusion that these were rolling barn style doors. So the old doors were scrapped and Keith went back to the drawing board.
His solution was to add to the bottom of the doors. Simple in theory, complex in actuality. The process took slicing down a 2x10 to match the thickness of the doors. Followed by the painstaking process of doweling the pieces together, notching in for wood joiners, and adding layers of Bondo to create a seamless integration. The final look was achieved using multiple colors of layered paint then carefully scuffed with razor. The top rods are painted wooden dowels.
Presto!! It's not magic folks, it's ingenuity, creative out-of-the-box thinking, and super cool tools 😎 Michelle's vision and Keith's tenacity to get it done came together to create this one of kind pantry set of doors. It's a great way to start a new week!
