❄️ Important Cold Weather Tips from Top Notch Heating and Air ❄️
As this historic winter storm moves through over the next few days, we wanted to share a few helpful tips to protect your comfort, your heating system, and your home:
For Heat Pump Systems:
• During extreme cold, it is normal and expected for backup/aux heat to operate
• Heat pumps are designed to maintain comfort, not recover quickly from large temperature setbacks
• We recommend keeping your thermostat set to a steady temperature and avoiding large overnight setbacks
• If your heat pump is having a hard time keeping up, manually switching to Emergency Heat at the thermostat is acceptable and often recommended during severe cold
• Emergency and backup heat rely on electric heat, which may result in higher-than-normal energy usage during extreme weather — this is temporary and expected
• If you suspect an issue with the outdoor unit (alerts, ice buildup, unusual behavior), placing the system in Emergency Heat can help maintain comfort until conditions improve
For All Heating Systems:
• Check or replace your air filter if you’re able — restricted airflow can cause issues in cold weather
• Keep supply and return vents clear and unobstructed
• If you have a gas furnace, ensure intake and exhaust pipes remain clear of snow or ice
General Cold Weather Notes:
• Ice, wind, and power interruptions can affect system performance
• Road conditions may limit travel during the worst of the storm, so early preparation is key
Courtesy Cold-Weather Home Tips:
• Open cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls to help prevent frozen pipes
• Allow faucets to drip slowly if temperatures drop well below freezing
• Use space heaters cautiously and keep them clear of furniture and curtains
• Avoid leaving garage doors open for extended periods in extreme cold
