A few snaps from last week’s employee picnic as we celebrated an important milestone, 15 years as part of the PBF Energy family.

While Toledo Refining Company has been refining fuel and supporting our region for more than 130 years, the last 15 years have been a period of tremendous growth, investment, and progress. Together, we’ve strengthened our operations, invested in our people, and deepened our commitment to the communities we call home.

We are grateful for the partnership, the opportunities, and most importantly, the employees, retirees, families, and community partners who have been part of this journey.

Here’s to celebrating how far we’ve come and looking forward to what’s ahead.

Check out the amazing progress of this mural by artist Dean Davis. This is a small part of his Glass City Riverfront Mural Project, and we are honored that he chose to include one of our tanks along the Maumee River.

Inspired by the men and women in the skilled trades who have helped build our country, the mural also serves as a tribute to the workers who lost their lives during the construction of the Glass City Veterans Skyway.

It is a powerful reminder of the dedication, craftsmanship, and sacrifice that have shaped our community.

We are incredibly grateful to be a part of this beautiful and meaningful project.

Please note: This mural is located on Toledo Refining Company property within a secure industrial facility. The site is not open to the public, and access is restricted to authorized personnel only.

What a week it has been at Toledo Refining Company as we celebrate 15 years with PBF Energy!

We kicked off the week by welcoming retirees and members of our Community Advisory Panel for a special luncheon. It was an opportunity to reconnect with those who helped shape our refinery's history, share updates on where we are today, and thank our community partners for their continued support and collaboration.

The celebration continued with our first-ever TRC Experience Day, where employees' children got a behind-the-scenes look at the refinery and the people who make it run. Junior Operators explored interactive stations, learned about refinery operations and safety, met employees from across the facility, participated in hands-on activities, and experienced firsthand the pride their parents bring to work each day. From hard hats and passports to scavenger hunts and demonstrations, it was a memorable day for both kids and families.

Throughout the week, employees also enjoyed special activities including our cereal drive benefiting local families, a Flower Bar and opportunities to connect with one another while reflecting on the accomplishments of the past 15 years.

While we celebrate this milestone, we're also reminded that our greatest achievement isn't measured in years, it's measured in people. The employees, retirees, families, contractors, and community partners who have contributed to our success are what make TRC such a special place.

Next up: Employee Picnic tomorrow 🍔 🌭 🍋

The new FCC regenerator head and shell have officially been reunited, a major milestone in this transformational project at TRC. 👏🏗️

Over the next month, another incredible phase begins as one of the largest cranes in the world is assembled right here on refinery property. The crane itself will arrive in multiple shipments before final assembly on site, an engineering project all on its own.

Every step of this FCC makeover represents months of planning, precision, and teamwork from countless skilled workers, contractors, and crews. Exciting to see the progress taking shape right here in Toledo! ⚙️

There’s often confusion around why the United States still imports crude oil while also being one of the world’s largest oil producers. The answer is more complex, and more important, than many people realize.

U.S. refineries are designed to process a variety of crude oils, including heavier crude grades that are not widely produced domestically. That’s why imports, particularly from Canada and Mexico, remain a critical part of keeping our refineries operating efficiently and helping maintain a stable fuel supply.

Articles like this help explain the role refining plays in America’s energy system and why a balanced, reliable supply chain matters for energy security, affordability, and the products people rely on every day.

A good read if you’re interested in learning more about how refining really works ⬇️

About 60% of the crude oil that runs through U.S. refineries is extracted right here at home. However, our refineries run on many different types of crude oil, some of which we don’t produce here or can’t economically transport. In those cases, we use imports.

We’ve loved seeing all the interest in our FCC Regenerator project this past weekend, and we’ve heard your questions!

▪️First, what is the FCC and why does it matter?

The Fluid Catalytic Cracking (FCC) unit is often called the heart of the refinery. It takes heavier oils and breaks them down into lighter, more useful products like gasoline and other fuels we rely on every day. The regenerator plays a key role in that process, helping keep the entire system running efficiently.

▪️”Why is it so rusty?”

Great question. What you’re seeing is carbon steel, which naturally oxidizes (rusts) when exposed to air and moisture. Unlike stainless steel, it doesn’t contain chromium to prevent that process...and that’s okay.

There was discussion about coating the vessel, but because the regenerator operates at extremely high temperatures (over 1,000°F), there’s no concern for atmospheric corrosion. Any paint or coating would burn off over time, so the rust color you see is purely cosmetic.

▪️”How will this impact us, the environment, gas prices, etc.?”

The updated FCC regenerator is like any new piece of equipment; it helps us operate more efficiently and reduce product waste, especially with catalyst use.

There is no negative environmental impact tied to this update. Our environmental controls and monitoring remain in place and continue to meet the strict standards set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

As for gas prices, those aren’t set by our local refinery. (We wish we had that kind of control 😉)

▪️”How many wheels were on that massive transporter?”

We’re still tracking down the exact number… but trust us, it’s a lot.

Sorry guys… rumors are not true 🤠🍰

The giant cowboy boot or the Tw***ie is not part of this turnaround.

That’s scheduled for 2031.

For now, we’ll stick to FCC regenerators and only slightly less ridiculous oversized loads 🚛
