September Landscaping Tips 🍂

September is one of those months where a little work in the yard can go a long way.

The summer heat starts backing off, the soil is still warm, and cooler weather gives us a great opportunity to get a few things done before winter.

This is a good time to plant trees and shrubs, aerate and overseed the lawn, clean up planting beds, refresh mulch, and check your landscape lighting as the days start getting shorter.

One thing I’ve learned over the years is that you don’t have to tackle everything at once. A few small things done at the right time can make a big difference in how your landscape looks this fall—and how well it comes back next spring.

And don’t be too quick to put the outdoor spaces away. Some of the best evenings on the patio are ahead of us in Western Pennsylvania!

This project was about more than adding a covered porch or updating the landscaping. It was about making the entire property feel more comfortable, connected, and complete.

From the retaining walls and carefully shaped planting beds in the front to the new covered porch, composite decking, paver patio, drainage, and purposeful landscaping in the backyard—every detail was designed to work together.

A lot of planning, problem-solving, and hands-on craftsmanship went into this transformation. We’re proud of how it all came together—and even happier knowing this family now has a beautiful outdoor space they can enjoy for years to come.

🌿 LANDSCAPE TIP OF THE WEEK — Fall Is for Planting

Most people think spring is the best time to plant, but fall is actually one of my favorite times to get plants in the ground.

The cooler temperatures mean less stress on trees and shrubs, while the soil is still warm enough for roots to keep growing. And with cooler days and typically more consistent moisture, you’re not fighting the summer heat trying to keep everything watered.

A few things to remember:

🍁 Trees & shrubs love fall planting — they can start establishing roots before winter.

💧 Keep watering — cooler weather doesn’t mean new plants can be forgotten. Keep them watered until the ground begins to freeze.

đŸŒ± Don’t over-fertilize — the goal right now is root development, not pushing a bunch of new top growth.

🍂 Add mulch, but don’t pile it against the trunk — 2–3 inches is plenty and helps protect the root zone going into winter.

Fall planting gives your landscape a head start, so when spring rolls around, those plants are already settled in and ready to grow.

Sometimes the best way to get a jump on next year’s landscape is to start this fall.

The fireplace is roaring. The grill smells amazing. Cold drinks are on the table, friends and family are settling in, and the Steelers are on the big screen.

The air is getting a little cooler, the fire feels a little warmer, and there’s nowhere else you’d rather be on game day.
