SLOPE microscopist Peter Werner will be presenting a talk on "Mushrooms of Ireland" in Berkeley this coming Wednesday 4/19 and again in a few weeks in Redwood City. Peter lived in Ireland for several years during and after earning his MSc degree in Microscopy and Imaging at University of Galway and was very active in local mycology while living there.

Talk description and details:

Ireland is blessed with an abundance of rainfall and a diversity of habitat that give the Emerald Isle a rich and diverse abundance of mycota. This presentation will discuss the mushrooms found in the woodlands, demesnes, burrens, grasslands, and heaths of Ireland and the burgeoning mycological milieu in Ireland today.

First talk: Bay Area Mycological Society, Berkeley, Wed, April 19

Reminder that tomorrow, Sunday 5/1 is our May Day Microblitz!

May Day Microblitz!

At Super Good Labs on Sunday 5/1 from 1pm to 6pm, SF Microscopical Society will be holding a day of microbial sampling and microphotography as part of City Nature Challenge 2022. We'll be examing fresh and saltwater samples from the SF Bay Area under the microscope and uploading photos of these to iNaturalist. These photos will be our contribution to the larger City Nature Challenge 2022 bioblitz taking place from 4/29 to 5/2, documening of our local biodiversity as part of a worldwide event.

If you're interested in hidden corners of the natural world, come by and have a look - no prior experience in microscopy needed! No need to bring anything, but if you want to, bring an aquatic sample (pond water, tide pool, etc), or a sample of other microbial realms, such as topsoil, moss thickets, used air filters, etc. And if you happen to have a microscope with a camera you can bring, please do, as we'll be able to get even that many more images to document our microbial diversity.

Super Good Labs is located at Circuit Launch, 8000 Edgewater Dr Suite #200 (top floor), Oakland, CA 94621: https://goo.gl/maps/qbS8AiCLbAFoVAu89

(Doors will be open at the beginning of the event, but later arrivals will need to phone the number posted on the door to be let in.)

We might also be broadcasting the event on Zoom or Twitch, details forthcoming.

Our event: What can you see with microscope?
4/30 11am-4pm
Come explore the microscopic world around you. Everyday you walk by thousands of invisible animals, plants and other creatures. What do they look like? You have to use a microscope to see!

Hope to see you there!
