* Project Update *

Bayview Environmental Services has continued to progress through the abatement and demolition process at 2900 Semiconductor. So far over 300,000 SF of office and lab space has been demolished and abated generating over 3,000 Cubic Yards of debris which has been removed and source separated to meet the Santa Clara and LEED silver recycling requirements. Since our last update we have also picked up the demolition and abatement of the 105,000 SF roof. This additional scope included the removal of penthouses, cooling towers, tanks, air handler units, as well as all associated ductwork, piping, and conduit. The roof scope is being performed concurrently with the interior demolition and abatement in order to further improve schedule efficiency. With the completion date nearing, Bayview is looking forward to finish strong and complete this successful project

Bayview Environmental Services was awarded the abatement and demolition project of the newly purchased 310,000 SF building by Intuitive Surgical. Bayview was tasked to provide a full interior gut of the building which required work from both Bayview Demolition Services and Bayview Environmental services. There was a coordination effort between both divisions in order to work simultaneously throughout the building to maximize schedule efficiency. This included demolition and abatement of office, lab, and warehouse spaces. Bayview is completing the project in accordance with the Santa Clara’s recycling requirements as well as LEED silver requirements.

Start Date: March 2022
Completion Date: August 2022

Presidio Trust Historic Preservation- Battery Bluff Park

Bayview Services performed historic restoration with specialized equipment and skilled labor to ensure preservation of the exterior facades of Battery Blaney. Several layers of graffiti paint were carefully blasted off of the asbestos-containing concrete surfaces to prepare the site for the new Battery Bluff Park. We are grateful we were able to assist on this historic project. The parks grand opening was on April 23rd, 2022. The park features picnic tables, views of the Golden Gate Bridge and gardens running throughout the 6 acre site. If you live in the San Francisco Bay area, this is a park you need to visit.

History of Asbestos 101

Asbestos occurs naturally throughout the world. The first recorded findings of asbestos were uncovered in the Stone Age, about 750,000 years ago. Asbestos’ resistance to chemicals, heat, water, and electricity made it an excellent insulator for the steam engines, turbines, boilers, ovens, and electrical generators that powered the Industrial Revolution.
As we move forward through the timeline, asbestos becomes a well know product used in buildings and other products sold around the world. From the 1940s to 1970s asbestos was used as an inexpensive way to have fire-retardant, thermal, and acoustic insulated homes.
In 2003 new environmental regulations put full or partial bans on the use of asbestos in 17 countries. In the United States, the last asbestos mine closed in 2002 and we’ve seen the use decrease significantly. Since asbestos was used so extensively, construction workers can still come across it on almost any jobsite. It’s important to have an education on asbestos to ensure you can identify it and understand where it can be found. Despite all the efforts to use asbestos safely, it remains a danger to human health, causing crippling diseases such as asbestosis, mesothelioma, and lung cancer.
At Bayview, we take a professional approach to ensure the safety of our clients and employees on every contaminated jobsite. We follow the proper procedures to ensure the jobsite is fully contained, we abate the contaminated materials, and ensure the workplace is tested and cleared for safety so the rest of the work can take place.

Bayview Services is continuing to expand our Maritime services throughout California. All vessels require repairs during their working lives. Maintenance and repairs will keep them in shipyards and out of commercial operation, costing owners significantly. It’s critical to have a highly efficient company providing these services to get the Ship back in service as soon as possible. We have worked with the Navy, Coast Guard, and United States Maritime Administration to help keep our front-line defenses on the water and out of the shipyard. We take the same approach to every ship we work with and hold the same standards. You can feel confident that Bayview Industrial Services will take the lead and get the job done right, the first time.

History of Construction 101 – History of Lead

Unbeknownst to many, lead paint was being produced as early as the 4th century BC. Specifically, the paint color lead white was popularized by artists and laborers due to its thickness, density, and opacity. People began adding lead to paint to accelerate drying times and create a long-lasting finish.

Lead was useful as well in construction. The Babylonians and the Assyrians used soldered lead sheets to fasten bolts and construct buildings. Lead was used for making water pipes in the Roman Empire, and its production subsequently grew throughout South and East Asia, especially in China and India. Across Europe, lead production began to revive in the 11th and 12th centuries, where it was used for roofing and plumbing.

Lead has been used for thousands of years in all type of applications and believe it or not the health risks have been recognized and recorded since as early as 2000 BC. Lead dust, fumes or v***r can be created when lead and items containing lead are processed, worked or recovered from scrap/waste. The body absorbs lead when it is inhaled or swallowed, but generally not through the skin. Lead that is absorbed circulates in the blood and bones where it can be stored for many years without ill health developing.

The hazards of lead are a very serious part of demolition and abatement. This is why at Bayview Services everyone from our foreman and superintendents to our estimating team has their Lead Supervisor Certs. This ensures that every task on every job is performed the safest way possible.

History of Construction 101- History of the Hard Hat

Invented in 1919, at first, wearing a hard hat was a choice, not a requirement. Miners and other workers bought the safety headgear on their own initiative. That changed, however, during construction of the Boulder Dam, later renamed Hoover Dam, along the Colorado River in 1931. For the first time, employers required workers to wear hard hats.

In 1933, building began on the mile-long Golden Gate Bridge across San Francisco Bay. Concerned about the threat of falling rivets as workers hammered home the hot-metal connectors into iron beams, chief engineer Joseph Strauss ordered everyone to wear hard hats.

While those were the first large jobs requiring all laborers to wear hard hats, if you fast forward almost 100 years, the hard hat is a main staple in every construction workers PPE kit. Most job sites will not even let you on site without wearing a hard hat.

Bayview Services understands the importance of a quality PPE kit and are thankful for the frontline laborers that have paved the way to making the construction world as safe as possible.
