Since 1958 Marion County Public Schools has hosted the Big Springs Regional STEM Fair (formerly Big Springs Regional Science Fair). Students compete either individually or in teams of up to 3 students in 13 categories representing both biological and physical science fields. From the regional fair, 32 projects qualify to advance to the Florida State Science and Engineering fair and up to 8 project
s advance directly to the International Science and Engineering Fair. During the 2022-2023 fair season Marion and Sumter County students took home over $100,000 in cash, prizes, and scholarships between the regional, state, and international science fairs. Big Springs STEM relies on community support. Each year over 100 community members volunteer on display and safety teams, logistics teams, and as project judges. Additionally, special awards offered by local businesses and community organizations help reward and motivate students.
