Why is there a burning smell when I turn on my heat?

If many months have passed since its last use, dust and other types of debris may collect on the burners, heat exchangers, air ducts and other components of the heating unit.

When you turn the furnace on, this dust and debris burn off, releasing a smoky odor. If you smell burning dust, don't worry.

How can you make sure you have the best indoor air quality? Here are 5 tips:

1) Monitor the Indoor Air Quality. There are monitors that give accurate readings of pollutants in the air. They detect carbon monoxide, mold spores allergens, VOCs, and more.

2) Improve Ventillation. You can open windows to allow fresh air in or remove furniture, cabinets, or storage boxes that may have blocked the vents. Fans and duct systems also help.

3) Monitor Humidity. If you want to kill mold, you need to keep humidity levels between 30-50%. A dehumidifier can help. Place unites where there is poor air circulation: basements, bathrooms and the like. Watch for peeling paint to know where humidity is high!

4) Replace Air Filters Frequently!

5) Keep your space clean. Warning - feather dusters don't help. Instead of trapping dust, they lift dirt and debris to set them airborne. Instead, use sponges or damp cloths.

If you're buying a home, or are ready to do home improvements, it's especially important to have the air quality tested for volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The goal is to make sure you aren't moving into a home that the previous owner remodeled using harmful products. An accurate test of your air quality can help detect VOCs so you can determine which steps to take next.

What kinds of HVAC filters are there for the home?

- Fiberglass Air Filters: These are disposable and are the least expensive. While they cause less strain on HVAC, they might not be powerful enough if you or your family members have allergies.

- Pleated Air Filters: Made of cotton or polyester folds, they are slightly more expensive than fiberglass but are more effective with filtering dust and other small particles. The more pleats the better. The MERV ratings for these filters typically run between 5 and 8.

- HEPA Filters: These high efficiency filters are recommended if you have allergies or other respiratory issues. While they are more expensive, they are the most effective at screening up to 99.97% of particles. Look for filters rated MERV 11 or higher. Remember, though, the higher the MERV, the more difficult it is for the HVAC to pull in air.

- UV Filters: These are used in air cleaners built into your HVAC system. They use ultraviolet light to kill viruses, bacteria, and other microorganisms, but they are not efficient at removing dust.
