Happy Juneteenth!

What comes across my mind on this holiday is the stories of my daddy telling me how he received mail by horse. He worked with his grandfather laying brick when he was a kid in Mississippi. He was one of the few that had access to a typewriter because my grandmother worked in the house of the affluent that didn’t have the same hair texture as she did. I remember the stories of my mother telling me my paw paw carrying heavy wood on his shoulders and my grandma picking cotton. Living in a shotgun house in the country of Louisiana taking care of 6 kids. My mom was one of the first to graduate from high school and college in her family. My grandparents didn’t have that luxury because they had to work.

Despite my parents upbringing they worked with what they knew and managed to raise my brother and I. I am grateful and thankful for these stories and being able to carry on the legacy of progress. We still have a ways to go but proud of my family and the family that I come from.
