Last week during Construction Safety Week, our team took time to participate in Safety Stand Downs focused on protecting both physical and mental well-being.

To kick things off, we welcomed Ali Pagnotta, Trench Safety Specialist with United Rentals Trench Safety, who reinforced fall protection and hazard awareness as part of the National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction. Discussions focused on recognizing hazards and preventing slips, trips, and falls both on and off the jobsite.

We also welcomed Frederick Delp, Executive Director of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Anne Arundel County, who spoke with our team about mental health awareness, the importance of checking in on one another, and the reminder that no one should suffer in silence. NAMI offers resources and assistance programs for anyone who may be struggling.

In addition, we highlighted motorcycle safety and electrical safety, as these are also important initiatives recognized throughout the month of May.

April highlighted several critical safety initiatives: Distracted Driving Awareness, Work Zone Awareness, Safe Digging, and the National Stand-Down to Prevent Struck-by Incidents. We brought each of them to life through an engaging, hands-on stand-down for our team.🚧🪏

During our distracted driving activity, employees took part in an interactive demonstration designed to show just how quickly things can go wrong. A simple paddle ball represented everyday distractions such as a cell phone while participants walked a chalk “road”. They were then challenged to react to unexpected pop-up hazards. The takeaway was immediate; even one distraction can significantly impact a driver’s ability to recognize and respond to what’s happening around them.

For Struck-by Prevention, new employees stepped into the operator’s seat to experience equipment blind spots firsthand. With crew members positioned around the machine, it became clear just how limited visibility can be and how critical it is to stay alert and communicate on the jobsite.

We also recognized Safe Digging Month by handing out seed packets as a reminder that whether you’re planting at home or working on a jobsite, calling 811 before you dig is a step you can’t afford to skip.

Backed by real stories and statistics, this stand-down reinforced the message that safety depends on awareness, accountability, and looking out for one another every day.
