Wind turbine blades are huge — we're talking tens of meters of composite. Checking every inch with a handheld probe would take forever, and every hour a turbine is off is money lost.

That's why thermography is so handy. It reads heat across big areas all at once and flags where hidden moisture, disbonds, or damage are hiding — covering in one scan what would take hours the slow way.

The smart approach: scan the whole blade fast with thermography to find the trouble spots, then zoom in with ultrasound or shearography to confirm exactly what's going on. Fast and thorough, without cutting into anything.

Here's a cool one from the inspection world: computed tomography — CT scanning. Same idea as a medical CT, but for parts.

Most inspection methods tell you where a flaw is. CT shows you the entire part in 3D — you can slice through it from any direction and see exactly what's inside: voids, porosity, inclusions, how the material is laid up. Nothing hidden.

For critical aerospace composite parts, that's the gold standard when "probably fine" isn't good enough. It's a bench method with size limits, so it's not for every job — but when a part really matters, nothing beats seeing all the way through it.

Flying somewhere this weekend? Here's a thought for the gate: the reason you don't worry about the airplane is that someone already did.

A lot of modern aircraft are built from composite materials — light, strong, and able to hide damage under a surface that looks perfectly fine. The reason that's not your problem as a passenger is inspection. Using ultrasound, thermography, and other methods, technicians find and map hidden damage long before the plane ever loads up.

That's the quiet side of our world. When it's done right, nobody notices it at all — the plane is just safe.

Ever seen little bubbles on the bottom of a fiberglass hull? That's osmotic blistering — some folks call it "boat pox." Water slowly works through the gelcoat, reacts with the laminate, and forms blisters. (Pop one and it smells like vinegar. Really.)

The important question isn't how many blisters there are — it's how deep the water has gone. A visual survey counts the bumps. It can't tell you if the moisture has reached the structural laminate underneath, which is the difference between a minor gelcoat job and a big repair.

Non-destructive testing answers that: thermography, ultrasound, and shearography show how far the water's traveled and whether the laminate below is affected — without cutting into the boat.

Turbine blades get hit by lightning. That's not a failure — they're designed to take strikes and route the current to ground through a built-in protection system. The problem is what the strike leaves behind.

A hit can burn, delaminate, or blow apart the laminate around the receptors and down the conductive path — sometimes with only a scorch mark visible from the ground while the structural damage sits inside the shell. Left uninspected, that damage grows under load and weather until the blade is a repair-or-replace decision.

Non-destructive testing tells you what the strike actually did. Thermography scans the affected area fast for subsurface damage. Phased array ultrasonics size delamination and disbonds through the laminate. Shearography reveals separations under load. Nothing is cut — you get documented data to decide between a monitor, a repair, or a pull.

After a storm, "it still spins" isn't the same as "it's sound."

Here's something people forget about inspection: the equipment matters, but the technician reading the results matters more. And inspecting composites is a different skill than inspecting metal.

Flaws in a fiberglass or carbon laminate — delamination, disbonds, voids, core damage — look nothing like a crack in steel, and the methods to find them are different too. It takes real training to know which method to use and how to read what comes back.

That's what we teach. Our composite NDT training gives new and upgrading technicians the knowledge, the standards, and hands-on practice on real parts — delivered in-house or right at your facility.

A lot of you are heading out on the water this weekend — so here's a friendly reminder from the inspection side of the world.

A fiberglass hull hides its flaws. Delamination, a soft spot in the deck, water soaked into the core — you won't see any of it on a shiny gelcoat surface. It just quietly gets worse.

Non-destructive testing is how you find that stuff before it finds you: ultrasound, thermography, and shearography that read what's happening inside the hull, without cutting into anything.

Here's something wind farm operators know well: every turbine blade comes with a warranty, and a deadline. Once that warranty ends, any hidden defect becomes your cost — not the manufacturer's.

The catch is that composite blades hide their flaws. Delamination, weak bond lines, and voids sit deep in the laminate where a visual check from the ground can't reach them. Left alone, they grow into expensive repairs or worse.

That's where non-destructive testing earns its keep. Using ultrasound, thermography, and shearography, we find hidden blade damage and map exactly where it is — without cutting into the blade. You get a clear report before you commission a new farm or before the warranty runs out.

Better to catch it while it's still a warranty claim than a capital repair.
