Celebrating 12 Years with Amber Whitehead! 💚

Yesterday, September 2, marked a special milestone at Allen’s Electric Motor Service. Amber Whitehead celebrated 12 years with our team!

Amber’s story at Allen’s is one we’re incredibly proud of. She started as a receptionist, and it didn’t take long for her hard work, dedication, and willingness to grow to stand out.

Over the years, she continued taking on more responsibility and working her way up. Today, she serves as an Accounts Receivable Specialist and is a truly valued member of our team.

Twelve years with one company says a lot. It speaks to loyalty, commitment, growth, and choosing to build a career alongside the people around you.

Amber is also one of many long term employees at Allen’s who have chosen to grow their careers here, and that is something we are incredibly thankful for. Their experience, knowledge, and dedication are a huge part of who Allen’s is today.

We sat down with Amber to hear a little more about her journey, what has kept her at Allen’s for 12 years, and how her role has grown along the way.

Maintenance guys, this one is for you.

You’re standing in a plant looking at a large motor that should be running…but isn’t.

Production is waiting. Everyone wants to know how long you’ll be down, and the question has already been asked:

“Do we repair it or replace it?”

Meanwhile, you’re thinking, Can we figure out what actually happened first? 😂

Because anyone who has been in that position knows there’s a lot more running through your head than the price of a repair versus the price of a new motor.

How long will either option take? What’s the replacement lead time? What did the vibration history look like? Is this the first failure? Is something else in the system contributing to the problem? And how much is every hour of downtime really costing?

There are really three costs in that decision: the cost to repair it, the cost to replace it, and sometimes the biggest one of all…the cost of getting it wrong.

We took a deeper look at this situation from the maintenance manager’s perspective this week, but we’d really like to hear from the people who actually live it.

What’s in the Shop Wednesday 👀

This one was pretty hard to walk past without stopping for a picture.

5,000 HP.
4,000 volts.
1,776 RPM.

This massive GE AC motor is currently in our shop, and our team is at one of the most satisfying stages of the job: reassembly.

After inspection and reconditioning, the pieces are starting to come back together. The stator has been reconditioned, the rotor reconditioned and balanced, and the sleeve bearings addressed as part of the repair process.

And when you're talking about a 5,000 HP motor, “putting it back together” is a little more impressive than it sounds.

That's why we do What’s in the Shop Wednesday.

Not everything needs a sales pitch. Sometimes we just want to open the shop doors and show you the seriously cool equipment our guys get to work on every day.

Big motor. Big components. A whole lot of iron. And piece by piece, it's becoming a motor again. 🔧

What looks like one problem can tell a much bigger story. ⚙️

This 500 HP Reliance DC motor came to Allen’s after an electrical failure while it was in operation.

Incoming testing quickly showed that the interpoles were grounded. But once our team got inside the motor, we found there was much more going on.

Soot on the armature and field frame. A charred and burnt interpole. Wear on the commutator. Moisture related bearing damage. Heavy fretting corrosion.

That is exactly why a thorough inspection matters.

Our job is not simply to repair the first problem we find. It is to understand why the equipment failed, what else has been affected, and what needs to be corrected to put it back into reliable service.

That approach has been part of Allen’s Electric Motor Service for decades. Inspect it thoroughly. Document what we find. Recommend what the equipment actually needs.

No shortcuts. No unnecessary work. Just experienced people doing the job the right way.

🔧 WHAT’S IN THE SHOP WEDNESDAY

Ever wonder what the inside of a 2,000 HP motor actually looks like?

This week, we’re giving you a closer look at a 2,000 HP, 4,000 volt synchronous motor operating at just 327 RPM.

The numbers are impressive, but honestly, seeing one of these opened up is even better.

Most people only ever see an electric motor from the outside. Once you get inside, you begin to appreciate just how much is actually happening in there. The stator, rotor, windings, slip rings, bearings and shaft all come together in one massive piece of industrial equipment.

And the closer you look, the more interesting it gets.

That’s exactly what What’s in the Shop Wednesday is supposed to be. Not a sales pitch and not a case study. Just an opportunity to open our shop doors and show you some of the equipment our team gets to work with every day.

Because some of this stuff is just really cool. 😎

The work you don’t always get to see. 🔧

We spend a lot of time sharing what happens inside our shop, but a big part of what our team does happens somewhere else entirely.

In the field.

Yesterday, we spent some time with our Field Service team at one of our customer locations, getting a closer look at the work they do every day.

And there’s something pretty incredible about seeing it firsthand.

Industrial work isn’t always clean or glamorous. It can be hot, dirty, loud and physically demanding. The equipment is massive, the environments can be challenging, and the work requires a level of knowledge and experience that’s easy to overlook when everything is running the way it should.

Behind all of that equipment are skilled people who know how to inspect it, maintain it, troubleshoot it and keep it operating.

That’s the part we’re proud of.

For Allen’s, Field Service isn’t just about showing up when something breaks. It’s about knowing the equipment, understanding the application and giving our customers an honest assessment of what they need.

That commitment to knowledge, service and integrity has been part of Allen’s Electric Motor Service for decades, and it’s something we have no intention of changing.

⚡MAKE THE CALL MONDAY: Motor Trips on Startup

The motor was running fine before shutdown.

Now it’s time to start it back up.

You hit START

The motor begins to energize, but almost immediately...TRIP

Reset it. Try again.

Same result.

No obvious smoke. No dramatic noise. Nothing immediately jumps out as the problem.

So, what’s your first move?

A. Check the incoming voltage and look for voltage imbalance or a phase issue
B. Check overload and protection settings
C. Verify the driven equipment rotates freely and isn’t mechanically bound
D. Start checking the motor itself — insulation resistance, winding condition and electrical integrity

A motor tripping during startup can point in several directions. **High inrush current, incorrect protection settings, low voltage, phase imbalance, a mechanical load problem, winding issues or insulation deterioration** can all be part of the investigation.

The key is knowing what to check first, and what the results tell you to check next.

🔧 Sometimes the repair comes down to thousandths of an inch.

Here’s a look inside the shop at a part of pump repair most people don’t normally get to see.

Our team is using our in-house CNC machining capabilities to precision-machine the outside diameter of a pump shaft, bringing it to the required dimensions for the mating component.

This isn’t simply “shaving down” a shaft. The process requires controlling shaft diameter, dimensional tolerance, concentricity, runout and surface finish so the rotating assembly can be properly fitted and aligned when it goes back together.

Those details matter. The relationship between the shaft, bearings, mechanical seal, coupling and impeller can directly affect vibration, seal performance and overall equipment reliability.

Having CNC machining capabilities in-house means our repair team can modify or manufacture components as part of the repair process without automatically sending that work outside the facility.
