Most big games are really a bunch of separate maps stitched together. That's why you get loading screens every time you go somewhere new: the game throws one area away and loads the next.
On Project Rezyra, we're building it the other way: one continuous world. The game only wakes up the part you're actually in and lets everything else sleep.
This week, our team got that working. You can take a fishing trawler out of the harbor and sail all the way to a station out at sea, and the game never stops to load. It just keeps going around you. Soon you'll be able to board or fly an airliner to another continent the same way.
Next is the really hard part: getting lots of servers to share that one world, so it can hold far more players than a single machine ever could.
In the industry, this is called object container streaming and server meshing. The best-known example took over a decade to get there. We've got the first half running, and we're going after the second.
