FAQ we get a lot: โ€œWhich Sherwin-Williams paint is best?โ€

We love Duration and Latitude. Duration has been around for a long timeโ€”ask your neighbor, they probably have Duration on their home. It works amazingly well. We use Duration for dark colors, and Latitude for light colors. Latitude can go on a little thicker than Duration, so it tends to cover better.

Iโ€™ve never thought Emerald or Emerald Rain Refresh is worth the additional cost. If you do proper prep, your paint job will last about 10 years either way. Spending another $1,000+ on premium paints like that usually wonโ€™t change that timeframe, because caulking and the paint will still fail over time due to weather and other external factors. I would only use SuperPaint if youโ€™re really budget-consciousโ€”but in my opinion, it doesnโ€™t save enough money to choose it over a mid-grade paint like Latitude or Duration. And I would never put A-100 on someoneโ€™s home. Ever. I consider that a cheap commercial paint, and it has no business being used on a house.

TL;DR: Duration (dark) + Latitude (light). Prep matters most.

Odyssey started back in 2001 when Doug Stecklein decided to build an exterior painting business the hard wayโ€”passing out flyers, earning every job, and obsessing over making the work perfect. Doug set what I still consider the gold standard for prep work in the Kansas City metro: full re-caulking and rolling primer on trim boards, drip edges, and weak spotsโ€”because thatโ€™s what makes a paint job last.

I (Jaron Hendrix) took over in 2021, and I still vividly remember that summer when a long-time Sherwin-Williams leader (20+ years with the company) visited one of our job sites. After seeing our prep work, he said: โ€œIโ€™ve never seen prep work done so perfectly before. Are you taking photos and showing customers this? This is perfect.โ€ That moment stuck with meโ€”and itโ€™s still our mindset today: we donโ€™t roll out a service until weโ€™re confident we can set the standard in it too.

One thing we were reminded of this week: all the planning in the world canโ€™t control the weather. โ˜”๏ธ

Weโ€™ve had a lot of rain this week โ€” and it looks like more is coming next week too โ€” which can shift exterior schedules even when everything else is lined up perfectly. Our goal is to plan ahead, communicate early, and make the right call so the job is done correctly (not rushed between storms).

When we finish a job, we donโ€™t just pack up and leave. We do a final walkthrough using a paper checklist on a clipboard with the crew and the homeowner โ€” old school on purpose โ€” so nothing gets missed.

We check the stuff that matters: the job site is spotless, touch-ups are handled with you, everything we removed gets put back (like house numbers/fixtures), and most importantly, youโ€™re genuinely thrilled with how your home looks.

Team Spotlight: Lindsay (my wife) โค๏ธ
Odyssey honestly wouldnโ€™t exist without Lindsay. I found Odyssey in the winter of 2021 when we were expecting our second child. At the time Lindsay wasnโ€™t working and I was doing Medicare sales, but she knew how badly I wanted something I could call my own. Even though I was the breadwinner, she looked at me and told me to quit my job and buy Odyssey โ€” and without that support, we wouldnโ€™t even be here.

And her support didnโ€™t stop there. Lindsay became everything behind the scenes: building our website, running the accounting, handling payroll, and helping keep the business organized as we grew. Now going into our 6th season, sheโ€™s still in the background making everything run smoothly โ€” all while raising our three kids.

Iโ€™m incredibly grateful for her. Odyssey runs because of her, and our family does too. โค๏ธ
