Yesterday, a major national news outlet said that Tampa Bay has been hit by hurricanes 5 times in the last 100 years. Today, they reported that Tampa has been hit by Hurricanes over 20 times! The truth is that Tampa Bay has not been hit by a hurricane since 1921. New York City gets hit by hurricanes much more frequently than Tampa Bay.
The news media loves to hype every potential hurricane and frequently claims that Tampa Bay is the target. With the Republican Convention starting on Monday, they are drooling over the prospect of hyping a potential disaster. But, Tampa Bay is in an ideal location that is generally well protected from hurricanes. To hit Tampa Bay, a hurricane has to pass through the narrow strait between mountainous Cuba and the Florida keys, then make a sweeping U-turn and come back toward the central west coast of Florida. That takes a very rare sequence of events to happen.
Hurricanes that do pass into the Gulf of Mexico, generally move across to hit Mexico or Texas. If they “make the turn”, they tend to curve north and hit the panhandle of FL. If they make the turn earlier, they pass up the East coast of the US. If it passes over Cuba, the big mountains tear it up and shift it’s course. Here in Tampa, we enjoy a nearly complete lack of problems caused by natural disasters. Other parts of the country have been ravaged by earthquakes, mud slides, floods, ice storms, blizzards, brown-outs, etc.
Yes, Florida has been hit by many hurricanes. But, Florida is a huge state with more miles of coastline than any other. The hits are concentrated on the east coast and the panhandle. Florida’s flat topography and frequent heavy rains also makes Florida practically immune to flooding from a major rain.
Yes we have an emergency plan and we do prepare for these storms. Our location is away from the coastal storm surge area, and on higher ground outside of the 500-year flood plain. Our building was built after the Hurricane Andrew building codes were put into effect requiring design for 130-mile-an-hour winds.
In spite of media doomsday predictions, I am confident that we will continue to supply our customers with high quality and timely delivery.
