π₯ KITCHEN GREASE FIRES: WHAT YOU SHOULD NEVER DO π₯
A grease fire can go from a small flare-up to a devastating house fire in seconds. Unfortunately, many homeowners make the mistake of throwing water on a grease fireβwhich can cause the flames to explode and spread instantly.
π« NEVER use water on a grease fire.
If a grease fire starts:
β
Turn off the heat if it is safe to do so.
β
Cover the pan with a metal lid or cookie sheet to cut off oxygen.
β
Use baking soda (not flour) to help smother small fires.
β
Keep the lid in place until the pan has completely cooled.
β
If the fire begins to spread, evacuate immediately and call 911.
Common causes of kitchen grease fires include:
β’ Unattended cooking
β’ Overheated cooking oil
β’ Grease buildup on stovetops and range hoods
β’ Frying foods at excessively high temperatures
