Boston Valley recently had the pleasure of welcoming students from SUNY Erie Community College to our Orchard Park facility for a behind the scenes look at architectural terra cotta manufacturing.
As part of their Architectural Detailing course, students are working directly with Boston Valley Terra Cotta as their primary source for detailing a historic panel from the Guaranty Building. Their assignment challenges them to study, document, digitally model, and physically replicate the piece, translating design intent into a buildable component.
During the visit, the class explored each step of the process, from clay batching and forming to glazing and firing, providing insight into the possibilities of how complex profiles and assemblies are brought to life.
We always value the opportunity to support the next generation of architects as they connect material, craft, and construction in a real world context.
