Boston Valley recently had the pleasure of welcoming students from SUNY Erie Community College to our Orchard Park facility for a behind the scenes look at architectural terra cotta manufacturing.

As part of their Architectural Detailing course, students are working directly with Boston Valley Terra Cotta as their primary source for detailing a historic panel from the Guaranty Building. Their assignment challenges them to study, document, digitally model, and physically replicate the piece, translating design intent into a buildable component.

During the visit, the class explored each step of the process, from clay batching and forming to glazing and firing, providing insight into the possibilities of how complex profiles and assemblies are brought to life.

We always value the opportunity to support the next generation of architects as they connect material, craft, and construction in a real world context.

At Willis Tower, Boston Valley Terra Cotta contributed extruded TerraClad® panels to both the entryway and interior atrium, featuring carefully developed glazes that enhance depth and surface character. The system brings texture and precision while supporting the scale and performance of these newly reimagined spaces.

Proud to be part of the continued evolution of such a significant building alongside an outstanding project team.

At Boston Valley Terra Cotta, custom glazes are developed through a deliberate process of testing and refinement. Variables like application technique, layering, and the interaction with the clay body all influence the final result. Even slight adjustments can shift a glaze from warm to cool, muted to vibrant, or flat to dimensional.

Contact our team today to learn more about custom glaze development.

Andrew Pries will be presenting at Zak World of Façades Los Angeles 2026 on April 9, with Matt Schwartz also attending on behalf of Boston Valley Terra Cotta.

Andrew’s session, Architectural Terra Cotta Innovations for Sustainable, High-Performance Façades, will highlight how terra cotta continues to evolve as a durable, high-performing material for today’s building envelopes.
