You may have seen the map going around showing the new Stratos data center campus approved in Utah. It's 40,000 acres and 9 gigawatts of power at full buildout. That's more than twice the electricity the entire state of Utah currently uses, residential and industrial combined.

It's easy to look at a project that big and assume it doesn't touch us here in Oregon. The reality is the opposite. Bonneville Power Administration has more than 65 gigawatts of pending transmission requests in its queue; so many that BPA stopped accepting new ones in August of 2024. Portland General Electric has roughly 3 gigawatts of active data center requests against a current system load of about 4.5 gigawatts. The Northwest Power and Conservation Council has warned that the regional grid could hit capacity within five years if data center growth continues at this pace.

Expanding the grid to serve that demand costs real money, and those costs get recovered through everyone's monthly utility rates. That's part of why home solar conversations have shifted. It's less about going green these days and more about fixing your electricity cost while utility rates climb to pay for industrial infrastructure.
