Yesterday, Westland was honored at the ABC Utah awards recognizing both excellence in construction and workplace safety.

The Spanish Fork Recreation (FitCity) Center received an Excellence in Construction Award in the Cultural/Entertainment Over $2 Million category, and Cyprus High School was recognized in the K-12 Facilities Over $5 Million category. Both projects were also recognized at the 2026 ABC Utah Labor Commission Workplace Safety Awards.

We’re proud of the teams behind these projects and grateful for the trade partners, owners, and architects we had the opportunity to collaborate with throughout the process. These awards represent a lot of hard work, teamwork, and commitment from everyone involved.

This week was Safety Week at Westland, bringing together our teams, trade partners, and vendor partners around one shared goal: helping every worker return home safely each day. Throughout the week, Westland’s safety team visited active jobsites alongside vendor partners to share important safety reminders, recognize crews for their commitment to safe work practices, and show appreciation for the hard work happening across our projects. These visits were a great reminder that safety is a team effort and an important part of the Westland Way.

Alexis Mahrt, one of our Division Coordinators at Westland, brought the Beaver Valley Wellness Center to life with a large-scale mural overlooking the aquatic area. As construction wraps up, her work adds a vibrant focal point for the Beaver, UT community. We’re grateful for the unique people and talents across our Westland team!

Westland is grateful to have been selected by the The Candy Bomber Foundation as the official general contractor for the Halvorsen “Candy Bomber Center” located in Spanish Fork, Utah.

This project honors the legacy of Gail S. Halvorsen and represents a meaningful intersection of historical preservation and modern education. Through museum galleries and STEM-focused learning environments, it will bring story of the Berlin Airlift to life for future generations.

The Foundation’s mission of service, education, and kindness is meaningful to us, and we are honored to contribute through this project. We’re grateful to work alongside the Foundation’s project team and appreciate the trust placed in ours as we look forward to the work ahead.

Every work environment is different, and that means safety plans need to be too. Our Safety Manager, Shane Darling, recently led a lunch & learn with our team at Salt Lake Regional Hospital, a project with Common Spirit Health.

The session focused on hospital construction safety and ICRA protocols (Infection Control Risk Assessments), helping the team understand how to work safely in a sensitive healthcare environment. From preventing infection risks to navigating patient areas, these trainings make sure everyone on site can do their work confidently and safely.

Our final spotlight for Women in Construction week was Rachel Brooks, Project Engineer at Westland.

Rachel is currently working on the Provo Rock Canyon Temple. Her day typically starts with planning out her priorities before joining the team’s daily huddle and walking the job site. From there, she focuses on coordinating drawings and making sure everything is ready so the field team can keep work moving forward.

One of Rachel’s favorite parts of her role is working with a great team to dig into challenges and find organized solutions together. Rachel was drawn to construction by the idea that something she worked on could physically stand for generations and impact countless people.

One of her favorite moments so far has been watching the stone cladding go up on the Provo Temple, seeing the craftsmanship come together and the result of so many people’s hard work. We’re proud to have Rachel on the team and appreciate the work she does every day.

Our next feature is Kristina Dewberry, one of our international team members and Superintendents at Westland Construction.

Kristina is currently leading the Freetown Temple project in Sierra Leone, Africa. Her days start early as she prepares a plan for the day before heading onsite for morning muster meetings with the Westland team and subcontractors. From there, much of her day is spent solving problems, coordinating work, and teaching along the way to keep the project moving forward safely and efficiently.

One of the things Kristina loves most about being a superintendent is the impact she can have each day. She plays a key role in managing the site’s safety program, helping the team think through the bigger picture while still making daily progress, and coordinating the logistics that keep a complex construction site running smoothly.

Kristina was drawn to construction because she loves seeing projects come to life in real time. Just as meaningful to her is watching the people around her learn and grow and being able to share the finished work with her family and the world.

Leading the Freetown team for the past three years has been one of the most meaningful experiences of her life. She describes it as both the biggest challenge and one of the greatest blessings, and she is grateful to work alongside a team that works hard and supports each other every day.
