Avantus celebrated the groundbreaking of the Galloway 2 Solar Project in Concho County, Texas, which will serve as a dedicated 147 MWDC/110 MWAC resource for Texas’ energy grid, generating clean electricity for 60,000 Texans. The project is creating more than 250 peak construction jobs and will generate more than $18 million in local property taxes, with over half benefiting the Paint Rock School District. The project is expected to come online before the end of the year. The majority of the project’s energy is committed to BASF Corporation, which is purchasing renewables to offset the energy demand at its Freeport, Texas site.

McDonald’s has partnered with Lightsource bp to purchase all of the power from a 180 MW solar project being built by the latter in Louisiana. The Prairie Ronde Solar project will generate renewable electricity equivalent to approximately 630 McDonald’s restaurants annually, as part of the fast food giant’s commitment to building a more sustainable system. The project is expected to begin construction in 2023, with commercial operation beginning in 2024.

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has reported that renewable energy sources provided 74.1% of new utility-scale generating capacity added in 2022 in the US, with solar and wind accounting for the majority. FERC underestimated the growth of solar and wind capacity, which ended up nearly double their projections. FERC forecasts that over the next three years, net high probability solar capacity additions could nearly double solar’s current capacity, while wind could see a 12.7% increase. By the end of 2025, renewable energy sources could account for almost one-third of total available installed generating capacity in the US.

AlphaStruxure, a joint venture between Carlyle and Schneider Electric, has announced plans to build a microgrid at New Terminal One (NTO) at JFK International Airport.

The microgrid will provide sustainable, resilient, and cost-predictable energy, with enough electricity to power 3,570 US homes for a year.

The project will feature the largest rooftop solar array in New York City, and the terminal will be the first in the region that can function independently of the power grid during disruptions.

AlphaStruxure will be delivering the microgrid, with Carlyle financing and Schneider Electric providing technology and services.

The microgrid is designed to meet New York's sustainability mandates and will contribute to the state's goal of 100% renewable energy by 2040.
