Normal liver enzymes do not always mean a healthy liver.

For patients with metabolic risk factors such as obesity or type 2 diabetes, MASLD and significant fibrosis may be present even when AST and ALT are not markedly elevated. Liver enzymes provide useful information, but they cannot show the extent of liver scarring on their own.
