Life only concerns itself with making copies. That is, Natural Selection always maximizes the gene. But sometimes errors occur in reproductive copies; errors by way of genetic mutation. Those error…

A rare sighting! Photographer catches male panther leaping over a creek at Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge in southwestern Florida. While their populations are estimated to be 200 individuals or so, the Florida panther is reclaiming territory north of the Everglades. However, their habitat is threatened by encroaching suburban sprawl. Steve Newborn for WUSF Brian Kelly, a panther biologist for the state of Florida, opens a creaking gate near Fisheating Creek, a narrow ribbon of preserved land just west of Lake Okeechobee....

Eureka! And it happened much more quickly than scientists expected. ----------------------------------------- Ben Turner for Live Science Scientists have pinpointed the moment in time our earliest ancestors evolved to be warm-blooded, and it happened much later and far more quickly than the researchers expected. The discovery, made by studying the minuscule tubes of the inner ear, places the evolution of mammalian warm-bloodedness at around 233 million years ago — 19 million years later than scientists previously thought....

A day removed, but still worth posting. Pi, from the perspective of a computational biologist. And a happy belated Pi day! 🥧 -------------------------------- Hunter Barrat for National Institute of General Medical Sciences Why do math lovers around the world call March 14 “Pi Day”? Because Pi, the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter, is 3.14. Pi is a Greek letter (π) that represents a constant in math: All circles have the same Pi, regardless of their size....

Supergenes that lock inherited traits together are widespread in nature. Recent work shows that their blend of genetic benefits and risks for species can be complex. ---------------------------------------------------------- Carrie Arnold for Quanta Magazine Thousands of miles from home in the steamy Amazon rainforest in the mid-1800s, the British naturalist Henry Walter Bates had a problem. More than one, really; there were thumb-size biting insects, the ever-present threat of malaria, venomous snakes, and mold and mildew that threatened to overtake his precious specimens before they could be shipped back to England....

Over the course of my academic career, I racked up two Master's Degrees, three Graduate Certificates, one Bachelor's Degree, and another Associate's. I would trade them all for one, just one Doctoral Degree in Conservation Genetics. I've struggled with this dilemma my entire career. Due to personal circumstances, my choices are limited. High risk paths are simply not feasible options for me at this juncture of my life....

A new wave of nonnative invasive species are making headway. A couple of years ago I wrote a separate article describing my prediction as to approximately when and how the agama would eventually surpass the green iguana and the brown anole as the most ecologically destructive invasive lizard in Florida. What's worse, the agama (which include two distinct species) can occur further north because they are more tolerant of colder climates....

Another climate change prediction becomes reality. For more than a decade now, we've been monitoring the slow decline in monarch butterfly populations across the entire continental United States. Researchers from coast to coast have been warning us about the negative effects that warmer temperatures, years of intense drought, severe wildfires, and exacerbated climate change would eventually have on monarch butterfly populations....

Bold statement, indeed. Right off the cuff, I should start by declaring that I dismiss the entire premise of the study that I'm introducing you to. Basic arithmetic project a different scenario. We've known this for long time in science. However, let us suppose that "intelligent life really can't exist anywhere else". So, okay. Who cares? What makes "intelligence" such a sought after attribute anyway?...
