Attention consumer: Remember, in all of these changes the government is implementing in order make AC units "more and more" efficient in order to "save more money in your overall power bills" you consumer are going to be ending paying the broken plates of these changes the government is imposing on you.
There so much manufacturers can do to comply with these changes and something is going to have to get traded. That something is "RELIABILITY". Unfortunatelly in today's economic conditions Residential Central HVAC Systems are EFFICIENT but unfortunatelly NOT RELIABLE compared with systems manufactured decades ago when those changes were not even thought. As a Certified Air Conditioning Contractor and Service Provider I have seen the ugly part of the changes the government have imposed. Seen on a day to day basis. Usually we as service providers are in the middle of all this because we are the one selling the systems, repairing the systems and maintaining the systems and it is sad to see for example an evaporator coil developing freon leaks in less than two years of being manufactured, or a capacitor failing in less than three, or an ECM motor, specially the electronic control module failing in less than 5 years. It is sad and wrong that many times the consumer dumps all the frustration on us without knowing that the real problem is the government intruding too much in fields that it is not supposed to stick their nose on. Ask you why manufacturers are giving 10 years warranty on these new equipment upon registration of the installed euipment? The real reason is to COVER for the UNRELIABILITY of the equipment for residential ac applications being manufactured today. That's the real reason in my honest opinion. At the end of this vicious circle you consumer is the one that pays the goods and the bads of this industry. Too much regulations already. Government wants more. Very sad.

The Department of Energy revealed new actions targeting consumer air conditioners in an effort to reduce pollution, curb climate change and save consumers money.

The fact that the system is old does not mean that the system is bad. I always say that "A GOOD REPAIR ALWAYS SAVES THE DAY".

This is the case of this very old hvac system.
I arrived to find this Evaporator Coil plugged dirty, highly corroded because of many years of hard work, but to my surprise still cooling with no problems.
At the time of the repair the house was recently renovated and the homeowner went through the whole renovation with the AC system activated.
As consequence, it got super dirty including this Evaporator Coil. Because the system was not developing any freon leak and was still cooling good I decided to propose a full cleaning of the system including to pull out and chemically clean this Evaporator Coil. Customer accepted and everything came out really good.
This job was done in July 2016.
This unit was 16 Years old at the time of the cleaning.
After we did this repair we kept coming every year to perform our DETAILED RESIDENTIAL MAINTENANCE SERVICE, and as of today (11/25/2022) this CARRIER system is still rocking like a champ, cooling and heating really really good.
Our customer knows that at some point in time this hvac system is going to have to be replaced, but he said that he will wait until this system dies completely (meaning until the compressor fails beyond repair or until the system develops an uncotrolled freon leak).
This is one example that not always recommending to replace the system is the only solution.
