SAVING YOUR SUMP DURING EXTENDED DOWNTIME
Metalworking coolant are an important component of metalworking operations, however discarding and replacing coolants can be costly and wasteful. Developing and implementing a coolant program for extended downtime can help minimize this cost.
An Effective program for coolant maintenance should include the following:
1. Proper coolant selection
2. Removal of all tramp oil
3. Removal of contaminants such as chips/swarf
4. Increase percentage of working solution to 15%
5. Aeration of sump
6. Apply rust preventive
PROPER COOLANT SELECTION
Not all coolants are created equal, when developing a program, it’s important to start with a coolant suitable for the application and your companies desire to limit the number of coolants on the shop floor. Attention should be placed on the refractometer multiplier of the coolant, the higher the multiplier, the more water is in the base product. At Advanced Chemical Solutions, we understand our customers don’t want a watered-down product. We maintain a highly concentrated base product, allowing our coolants to work better and provide a better value.
REMOVAL OF TRAMP OIL AND OTHER CONTAMINANTS
Coolants are most frequently contaminated by tramp oil, chip and swarf, bacteria and fungus. Removing these contaminants can prolong the life of the coolant and reduce overall cost for most manufacturing companies. Skimmers, both belt and disc or coalesce units are very effective in the removal of contaminants.
INCREASE PERCENTAGE OF WORKING SOLUTION
Advanced Chemical Solutions uses proper PH levels to help combat bacteria. Proper coolant PH level should be 8.6 to 9.4. At these levels, bacteria is minimized as well as corrosion. Increasing the working solution to 15% will help maintain PH and provide increased biocide package during downtime.
AERATION
A simple fish tank pump can provide needed aeration. Bacteria that is present in coolant is anaerobic, meaning they don’t like oxygen rich environments. Anaerobic bacteria breaks down the sulfur-containing compounds in coolants and then produces an acidic hydrogen sulfide gas, resulting in rotten egg smell. This acidic condition will also create rust and a corrosive environment on your machine tools and parts.
Aeration creates an oxygen rich environment, preventing anaerobic bacteria growth.
RUST PREVENTIVE
Using a premium solvent based, water displacing rust preventative can help protect your investment.
Advanced Chemical Solutions Protech IT 165S is formulated to provide a monocular thin dry film of protection on part to be stored indoors for 6-12 months protection. Protect IT 165S can be applied to metal surfaces by dipping or spraying. It does not typically need to be removed.
