Yesterday’s groundbreaking for Woodland Hills Elementary School in Kansas City, KS reminded us of the vision behind this project and the impact it will have on the community. The new school will combine students from Silver City and Noble Prentis elementary schools and plans to open in 2028.

The projects we are highlighting this week for “50 Projects for 50 years” showcase our ability to support industrial, defense, and mission-critical facilities, each designed to meet demanding requirements while enhancing the performance of their respective campuses.

At Whiteman Air Force Base, the Force Support Squadron Annex provides quality of life, personnel, education, and readiness services for Air Force members. The building won the Honor Award in the 2024 Department of Air Force Design Awards.

The EARP regional distribution center in Edwardsville, Kansas spans 163,000 square feet of highly specialized warehouse functions, including cold storage, freezer space, office areas, storage mezzanines, and multiple loading docks. PMA also provided full structural engineering services for a separate 16,200-square-foot truck maintenance building, complete with a 1,620 square foot mezzanine to support fleet operations.

Lightedge Data Center in Altoona, Iowa is a 48,500-square-foot, single-story data center featuring two exterior mechanical yards. The building was designed to accommodate a raised floor system as well as a future expansion on the east side.

To continue our “50 Projects for 50 Years” series, we are highlighting two local office buildings. 7101 Tower and Plaza Steppes both showcase how strong structural engineering supports distinctive office architecture, from iconic landmarks to contemporary high-rise developments.

7101 Tower, known locally as the ‘Darth Vader Building” is defined by its distinctive shape, reflective glass, and black granite façade. The 16-story tower serves as BOK Financial’s area headquarters and stands as a recognizable landmark. It’s often illuminated at night to celebrate the local sports teams and features a first-floor bakery.

The Plaza Steppes Building is a 13 story high rise office tower located in the Country Club Plaza. The building introduces a contemporary architectural language to the Plaza’s traditionally low rise, Spanish influenced context through its stepped massing and vertical form. Also featured is a six-story below grade parking garage.

Celebrating 50 years of structural engineering excellence, these two projects represent prominent mixed-use and office developments that contribute to the civic and commercial landscape of the Kansas City metro.

6201 College is a seven-story office building best known as the former home of the NCAA National Headquarters. Since the NCAA’s departure from Kansas City in the late 1990s, the property has transitioned to a multi-tenant office building and is now home to several occupants, including Overland Park City Hall’s future home.

Plaza Colonnade is an 11-story mixed-use building that serves as the home of the Kansas City Public Library, with office space occupying the upper levels. The building is also home to Husch Blackwell corporate offices, which received the 2026 Kansas City Business Journal Capstone Award in the Office category. Also featured is a 300-seat auditorium on the lower level. Adjacent to the structure is a seven-level, 425,000-square-foot parking garage with a capacity of approximately 1,300 vehicles.
