How to increase the efficiency of your furnace in three ease steps.
1. Clear the Registers
When your furnace can circulate air effectively, your home will reach the desired temperature much faster. One of the easiest ways to improve this is to ensure that the vents in each room are open. After this, check that furniture and other obstructions are not too close, as this will impede airflow and can create a fire hazard. Generally, you should leave about one foot of space on all sides of the vent.
Without this step, your furnace will run more often. This wastes energy and stresses the internal components, such as the motor. If your new furnace cycles more frequently, it could break down prematurely.
2. Replace the Air Filter
When the furnace runs, it pushes heated air throughout your home. However, this must first pass through a filter, which collects any dust, pet hair, and debris before reaching other rooms. This keeps the air healthy and removes any potential contaminants.
However, after frequent operation, the debris can clog the filter. When this happens, your furnace must work harder to push air through, forcing it to run longer. Check the filter once a month for blockages. If it is dark and grey, replace this component so that your new furnace operates efficiently.
3. Use Ceiling Fans
While many people think that ceiling fans are only useful during the summer, they can reduce the workload on the blower in your furnace. To do this, look for a switch or button on the base of your ceiling fan that will reverse the direction that it spins. This makes the fan rotate clockwise, drawing cool air toward the ceiling and forcing the warm down into the home. Because this uses less energy than the furnace, it will reduce utility bills and improve circulation.
