🏆 2026 Mine Rescue of Indiana Man of the Year Award - TOMMY DOANE🏆

One of the most meaningful moments of the Indiana Mine Rescue Contest is recognizing an individual whose dedication, leadership, and service have left a lasting impact on the mining industry.

This year's Mine Rescue of Indiana Man of the Year Award honors an individual whose career has spanned more than 50 years of unwavering commitment to mining, mine rescue, safety, and education.

Beginning his career at Amax Coal in 1974, he worked in a variety of roles underground, operating roof bolters, haulers, continuous miners, and whatever was needed to get the job done. As his career progressed, he served as a dust and noise technician, health and safety inspector, face boss, and mine manager. He joined the mine rescue team in 1976 as the #2 man and played an instrumental role in the team's success at WKMI and Illinois competitions. In 1985, he began teaching mine rescue, serving as an instructor until 1991. Later in his career, he became Director of Health and Safety at the Castle Gate Mine in Utah before returning to Indiana as a Senior Training Specialist in the corporate office in Evansville.

Even after retiring from the coal industry, his passion for mining and developing others never stopped. He served as Chief Executive Officer for Ready Mix Concrete, Sand and Gravel Mining, and for the past 16 years has continued to shape the next generation as a mining instructor at Vincennes University. Beyond his professional accomplishments, he also gives back to his community as a Sunday school teacher at his church. His positive impact has been felt by countless people throughout the mining industry. From his early days as an equipment operator to his years on mine rescue teams, his leadership in management and safety, and his continued dedication to educating future miners, his legacy is one of service, mentorship, and excellence.

Our Mine Rescue Team proudly represented us this week at the Kentucky State Mine Rescue Contest, competing against some of the best teams in the region.

Out of 23 highly skilled teams, our team finished 9th overall. While the competition was challenging, the dedication, teamwork, and determination demonstrated by these individuals throughout the event are commendable.

Mine rescue competitions test knowledge, communication, problem-solving, and emergency response skills under pressure. Skills that are critical to keeping miners safe every day.

We want to congratulate our team on their hard work and commitment. Their coach summed it up best: "The guys worked hard for sure, and I am proud of all of them."

Thank you to our team members for representing us with professionalism and pride. Great job, gentlemen!
