The Sherwood Diner, also known as “Worcester Diner #755”, was built by the Worcester Lunch Car Company back in 1940. Operating first in Medford, Massachusetts, it was relocated a decade later to 56 Foster St., Worcester. The owner, Ernest Ryan, continued to operate the diner until his demise in 1969. After his death, the diner was sold in 1971 once the city of Worcester offered to purchase the property. For a while, the diner sat in Auburn as an ice cream stand, but closed only a few years afterwards. This historic diner has suffered major deterioration and vandalism over the years due to its constant relocation and abandonment. In 1994, it was donated to the American Diner Museum and any stolen/missing parts were never returned. The 20th century wasn’t too kind to the Diner, but in the 21st century, it is being restored to its former glory in one of Worcester’s most iconic recreational areas: Polar Park. Next to the duck boat that has famously carried the Red Sox, Patriots, Bruins, and Celtics during parades, the Sherwood Diner will be used as a broadcast booth for pre-game and post-game interviews. It will also be used for autographs and fundraisers. Stutman Contracting, Inc. is working hard to make sure that this historic diner will be restored and better than ever. When we first received the diner, it was only a shell of what it once was. Now, our team has skillfully utilized many of the original materials to preserve the historic nature of the diner. Both the interior and exterior will be as authentic as possible. As of right now, we have turned the diner from a shell of what it once was to the closest replica of the original diner. Stepping into the diner, you will truly see the authenticity of the 40’s all around you. From the tiles on the floors to the doors we’ve created ourselves.
We’d like to thank Polar Park for once again asking us to be a part of Worcester’s amazing development! We are excited to see the diner at the entrance of Summit Street soon.
